Exhaust Info
Upgrading the exhaust system on a rotary engine car has always proven to be the easiest way to increase performance. When upgrading the system, you want to improve flow as much as possible for maximum power. If you drive the car on the street, then you must have a catalytic converter, otherwise you’ll get the biggest power gains from a racing system.

1979-1980 Model
During the RX-7’s first two years, Mazda used thermal reactors instead of catalytic converters to meet the emissions standards. Unfortunately, we do not offer a street-legal replacement system for these year models.

1981-1985 12A Models
Beginning in 1981, Mazda moved to using catalytic converters and did away with the thermal reactor system. Since the converter technology was very new at the time, the systems were very restrictive and sapped power from the engine. Replacing these converters with a high flowing unit or a race pipe is one of the best things you can do to help engine longetivity, increase performance, and increase fuel economy.

1984-1985 13B Models
The limited quantity GSL-SE, with its 6-port 13B engine, had an exhaust system similiar in many ways to the 12A model but unlike the 12A models, it utilized exhaust backpressure to open up additional ports on the intake manifold for high RPM operation. When upgrading to a high flow system, it’s important to address this difference properly. All Bönez systems have provisions to help make the 6-port system work properly.

DESCRIPTION

Racing Beat offers a complete RX-7 high-performance exhaust system for the 1984-85 13B (GSL-SE) RX-7. This system includes our Road Race Header, a Power-Pulse Presilencer, and our legendary Power Pulse main muffler. The Power Pulse Presilencer unit is equipped with an exhaust backpressure pickup tube that allows the correct operation of the 6-Port intake actuators. Be careful, if you are considering a replacement exhaust system that does not have this important feature, your intake system will not perform correctly and a noticeable decrease in high RPM performance will occur. These components attach to all stock mounting points, and include all necessary gaskets and hangers. The only component not included is the factory connecting pipe that mounts just ahead of the main muffler. There is no horsepower to be gained by replacing this pipe with a larger diameter assembly. If your factory connecting pipe needs replacing, we suggest you contact your local Mazda dealer or muffler shop. These exhaust systems offer excellent horsepower gains when you require a muffled exhaust system for your stock-ported engine. The actual horsepower increase depends on which year/model stock RX-7 exhaust system you are comparing to, but a 22% increase at 7000 rpm is typical. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Power-Pulse Presilencer and the Power Pulse Main muffler, the exhaust noise is only slightly higher than stock, with a very low, pleasant character.

Racing Beat 13B Exhaust Header, 84-85 RX7 GSLSE 6-port, 81-85 4 PORT CONVERSION

This RX-7 Header is designed for a bolt-on installation, when used with the appropriate Power Pulse Presilencer in all 1981-85 RX-7 with 13B conversion or the 1984-85 RX-7 GSL-SE models. The combination of this RX-7 header and the appropriate presilencer replaces the stock exhaust manifold and all catalytic converters for use in racing applications, along with any intermediate pieces of tubing. This header includes a mounting flange for the oxygen sensor.

The Racing Beat RX-7 header assembly is constructed with .120-inch wall, mandrel-bend, mild steel tubing for increased durability and sound suppression. Both flanges are laser-cut from .5-inch thick steel plate for positive gas sealing. An outlet gasket is included. An engine-to-header gasket is available separately if needed.
