Silly question: Would you place food into a wound on the back of your hand and then scrape it with the hard, sharp edge and expected it to heal? Mouthwounds need to be kept free of food for several days that can pack into or abrade. Soft liquid diets that can be swallowed without chewing are best. Dry sockets, which are extremely painful develop when the clot becomes infected and is lost. One severe ouch!

2 hours: You can begin eating most any food that is comfortable once the anesthetic has worn off. You will likely get part of the chips in the extraction site, but you should avoid trying to flush them out for 24-48 hours. Better to stay with a soft diet for 24-48 to avoid accumulation of food in the extraction site.

Chips: I would wait at the least two days. I would be sure to rinse with salt water two to three times per day or more often to keep the area clean for good healing.

Is a can of chunky soup with potato chunks safe to eat after a tooth extraction?

No: Not a good idea as the pieces may get in the socket and disrupt the clot and cause a dry socket. Opt for plain beef or chicken broth, or cream soup without pieces of anything in it -- tomato is good. Be careful and have a non-eventful healing process. Good luck.

When to eat chips after tooth extraction?

Best not: This can irritate the healing tissue. Best to let the tissue heal properly before doing harsh things.
