MAIMONIDES MEDICAL CENTER

Maimonides Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency provides one of the most unique and rewarding training environments in the country. Surrounded by the 2.6 million residents of Brooklyn, New York, Maimonides serves an incredibly varied patient population. Our patients speak many different languages and represent many different cultures. Given the diversity of our patients, Maimonides residents have the benefit of first hand experience with a broad range of pathology not available at other training centers. Our patients are a decade older on average than those seen in other urban ERs and reflect what others will be seeing in their ERs in ten years.

Because Maimonides has a long history of exemplary tertiary care, many of the sickest patients in Brooklyn are treated in the Maimonides Emergency Department. Trainees will benefit directly from the extensive critical care experience of the attending and nursing staff. The emergency department also has a substantial amount of support staff including technicians, phlebotomists, EKG technicians, translators, clerks, transporters and dedicated patient representatives to assist with every aspect of emergency care. A great staff coupled with award winning, cutting edge computer technology creates a work environment where resident physicians can focus primarily on patient care and their own medical education.

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Maimonides received full accreditation for seven years in 2005. The first class of Emergency Medicine residents graduated in 2005. Our residents have been highly sought after and have gone on to fellowship training, academic and community practice. The program is a three-year training program (post-graduate year 1,2,3) which accepts sixteen residents each year for a total of 48 residents.

The emergency center facility was constructed in 1997 and underwent expansion in September 2007. In addition to the clinical areas, the department has a dedicated teaching and administrative building that contains a 600-square-foot conference room, as well as faculty offices and space designated for resident use.

The patient care area is divided into three separate patient care areas: adult critical care, adult acute care, and pediatric emergency care. The adult treatments areas have capacity for over 100 patients simultaneously, including four designated resuscitation bays. The resuscitation area contains many state-of-the-art devices such as fiber-optic laryngoscope and ultrasound machines. The pediatric emergency care area consists of fourteen treatment areas including a dedicated pediatric resuscitation bay. Our clinical area also contains a dedicated radiology suite with two rooms for digital plain radiography and a CT scanner. Our medical record is completely electronic including all ancillary data such as EKGs and radiology studies. Inpatient records are also available through the hospital’s computer network. There are numerous computer work stations located throughout the Emergency Department which allows residents access to all hospital medical information systems and the Internet.
