Established in 1869 under the Morrill Land Grant Act in West Lafayette, Purdue University was founded with the help of donations pouring in from Tippecanoe County, 100 acres of land was offered by local residents and a sum of $150,000 was presented by John Purdue, who also provided land to establish a college of agriculture, science and technology. In 1874, the first buildings on campus including the Boiler and Gas House, the Military Hall and Gymnasium, the Ladies Hall, Purdue Hall, and the Pharmacy Building were completed, however, none of them remains today. The same year, classes at the University began with six instructors and 39 students.
