Tranexamic Acid Overnight Treatment is a powerful, brightening overnight mask. 2% tranexamic acid works to lighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation on the skin’s surface.

Go to sleep with THE INKEY LISTs Tranexamic Acid Overnight Treatment and wake up with brighten, more even skin. Perfect for those with dark spots or scarring from breakouts, this high performance overnight mask works wonders. The tranexamic acid is supported by 2% vitamin C derivative 2% antioxidant-rich acai berry which works to improve skin clarity and even out skin’s tone.

Until the recent skincare boom made seriously effective cosmeceutical ingredients more accessible, I spent endless weekends trying DIY masks and scrubs that promised evenly-toned skin.

And it’s no wonder, because if your skin is on the darker end of the spectrum – like mine – its natural response to even the most benign form of inflammation, like a spot, is an overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment that gives skin its colour, that can leave your face (and body) riddled with marks and scars.

Why do some people get darker marks on their skin?

According to consultant dermatologist at London Bridge Hospital, Dr. Zainab Laftah, 'Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, is a temporary state of excess melanin (pigment) production in the skin often caused by a preceding inflammatory process.'

Basically, when my skin identifies a source of inflammation, like a pimple or a bite, it responds by love-bombing the site with excess skin-repairing and building nutrients – and melanin just so happens to be one of them.

To effectively treat PIH, Dr. Laftah suggests a 'multi-step approach'. This includes:

  • Cleansing twice daily to remove build-up of oil, dead skin cells and impurities, and help penetration of skincare products
  • Use products that block tyrosinase – a key enzyme responsible for melanin production (like tranexamic acid)
  • Use a sunscreen with coverage against UVA, UVB and infra-red radiation to prevent sun-induced pigmentation.

For the past few years my response to fading dark marks has been to add Alpha Arbutin and Mandelic acid to my nightly routine – the former prohibits melanin overproduction, while the latter gently exfoliates. But, lockdown laziness means I’m suddenly in desperate need of one product that promises the results of my two-product process. Enter the The INKEY List’s Tranexamic Acid Night Treatment.

What Does The INKEY List’s Tranexamic Acid Night Treatment Do?

According to The INKEY List, this treatment 'targets hyperpigmentation, uneven patches and dark spots.' Judging by the positive Reddit threads and YouTube reviews dating back to its release about a year ago, its popularity is well-deserved.

So what exactly does the star ingredient in this treatment do? Despite its name, tranexamic acid has no exfoliating properties. It’s a tyrosinase inhibitor that lightens dark marks, melasma and PIH 'by interfering in the chemical pathway that causes pigmentation in the skin along multiple steps,' says consultant dermatologist, Dr. Anjali Mahto. She further explains, 'it reduces the synthesis of tyrosinase – an important enzyme in pigment production – as well as reducing the interaction between our pigment producing cells and regular skin cells.'

In this formula, tranexamic acid is paired with vitamin C and acai berry for further brightening purposes, and topped with emollients like glycerin and olive oil to leave the skin feeling supple.

How I used The INKEY List’s Tranexamic Acid Night Treatment

Every night over a 10-day period I pumped the treatment directly onto my face and then spread it with my fingertips before patting it into my skin. It didn’t pill over several layers of hydrators, and it never left a tacky or oily residue, meaning it didn’t change the texture of the moisturiser I used over it.

Although the website states that it should be 'your last step before sleep', the symbols on the bottle suggest it can be sandwiched after lighter serums and before moisturisers. I have constantly parched skin, so I let the treatment soak in for half an hour and then followed it with a light ceramide moisturiser.

My Verdict on The INKEY List’s Tranexamic Acid Night Treatment

Fading PIH with over-the-counter products is one of those skincare to-dos that you won't check off in a day, a week or even a month. It usually takes me about 4-6 weeks after adding my winning formula of alpha arbutin and mandelic acid to my routine before seeing noticeable results.

    Before (L) and after (R)

So, I wasn’t expecting to see much of a difference after using the treatment over a ten-day period, but by the looks of things, the darkest scars on my cheek are a lot less vivid than they were before, so it’s clearly effective.

This product applies like a dream, it feels like a rich, hydrating serum and leaves the skin feeling moisturised which is unlike any skincare products I’ve previously used to 'treat' hyperpigmentation.

My only drawback is the pump bottle – I’m so used to the easy squeeze of a serum dropper – but I’ll just have to get used to it because I definitely plan to repurchase it!

How many times a week should you use Inkey list tranexamic acid?

As for frequency, while most experts agree Tranexamic Acid is safe to use daily, The Inkey List recommends you use the treatment two to three nights a week. This is because their formula doesn't layer well alongside moisturisers and oils, so to prevent dehydration you should only use it a few times a week.

Can I use The Inkey List tranexamic acid in the morning?

Yes, it is suitable to layer with Niacinamide and all other ingredients in your AM or PM skincare routine. To get the best out of Tranexamic Acid in your usual routine, apply as the last product. If you wish to use a moisturizer, we suggest waiting until Tranexamic Acid has completely absorbed.

What can you not mix with tranexamic acid?

Since acids can generally be drying, be sure to ease into introducing tranexamic acid into your routine, and be wary of mixing it with other intense actives like glycolic or retinol.

Can you put on moisturizer after tranexamic acid?

Adding tranexamic acid to your skin care routine You can use tranexamic acid at any time of day. Guanche recommends adding products with tranexamic acid to your evening skin care routine. Paik advises using it after cleansing your skin and before applying moisturizer.
