Hey all, SO it's been a while since iv'e posted and i got hella story and question about the camshaft sensor.
A while back i was having issues with my car starting up at once, it would crank, crank, crank then start. So i looked into it and replaced, starter relay, starter fuse, new fuel pump and still nothing!! it would still crank for a few seconds and then start all i could think was WTF. so i was driving with that problem for about 4 maybe 6 months; long time, i know. one day my moms xterra had a messed up timing belt, and so as the amazing son i am, i went to the rescue... at the time i though it was the xerras battery... so i was trying to jump it and stuff and as my charger is running for a while the red lightning bolt, and traction control turned on on the dash. i was able to drive it home. the dealership said it was the whole timing belt on my charger from belt to pulleys and all that fun stuff. BUT they were trying to charge me 850 bucks!! hell no i said, so i got my buddy that is also a mechanic to look at it, he said that the timing belt did need to be changed, and he charged my 125 of labor, i payed for parts.... so today i go to his house and pick my charger up and he said that i needed a camshaft positioning sensor, that was the reason it was having the delayed start issues...

so now i ask to the ppl here:
-can the camshaft sensor be the reason for my charger having the starting issues?

-Where is the camshaft sensor located in the engine??

all sorts of feed back would be awesome, because not only am i gonna have the proper fix, but we could help many other people with the same issues, alot of threads and forums go from the camshaft to crankshaft which are different, but sound almost the same help me, help others, by helping me lol:bigthumb:

Same here. Intermittent hard starting, usually after driving then making a short stop. Fixed by replacing camshaft position sensor. About $25 and 15 minutes.

I believe its located in the timing chain cover...give me a few and I will double check

Yes it is, in the timing cover just release the electrical connection and then unscrew it...use antiseize install the new one and reconnect

autozone got me the crankshaft sensor instead of the camshaft sensor!! so the camshaft is literally in front of the engine ?and the crankshaft by the starter on the passenger side ? i think i saw it unless theres more than one sensor

Camshaft sensor is up front, easy to get to. Crankshaft sensor is down by the starter, hard to get to.

The parts seem to say otherwise, the camshaft sensor looks exactly like the one in the the front of the engine, while the shape of the crankshaft looks just like the one in the back side of the engine
Am i getting them wrong ?

Sorry, I had it backwards. The camshaft position sensor is up front, the crank sensor is down below. I'm editing my previous post so nobody thinks it was right.

Is the 6.1L about the same? I'm chasing a ghost and this might be part of it.

I think the 6.1 is the same. Camshaft position sensor gets flaky and causes hard starting.

i noticed there was a loud hissing sound, and found an air leak or vacum leak behind the intake... next to the PCM hose that connects to the catchcan; could that be the problem and the reason that the lighning bolt, and traction control lights turn on randomly when i drive and lose power and even turn off?

A vacuum leak can certainly cause all types of problems. The PCM controls the throttle actuator to regulate the engine vacuum. If the vacuum in the intake manifold isn't regulated properly due to a leak, the PCM will be commanding the throttle but won't see the result it's expecting. It could cause the PCM to think the throttle isn't responding and set the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) light in the instrument cluster.

Where is the camshaft position sensor located?

The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head. The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block.
