Aug 4, 2012 My 09 has the 4 cylinder and I was about to get the oil changed today. Joined Nov 29, 2011 · 122 Posts
I've bought an aluminum oil filter wrench on a dealership for $37. Before I took it to home, I asked a sales person to bring the oil filter housing and checked how the wrench fits. The wrench is tall and has slots in it, and the plastic oil housing has 4 matching "wings" sticking out. The wrench fits on the housing with only one way, "wings" go in to the
slots. Another side of the wrench has 3/8 square for a ratchet. This how you fit the wrench on the filter housing when unscrew it from a motor and put it back with a new cartrige. I did not use that cheap 64 mm x 14 thing. By the way, to drain oil from the filter itself takes about 10 min.
#1. I took the plug out to drain the pan and dropped the lousy oil filter plug in the drain pan. Tried to get it out quick and got oil all over the garage floor with out any success. I later had to do the feel it and get it out dip.
#2. Well I got back up from under
the vehicle to get my oil filter wrench that I ordered on line somewhere and it was not there where I keep it on the wall hanger. I looked all over every inch of the garage.
The only thing I can come up with is I left the thing on the filter cartridge the last oil change and it is laying where ever my wife and I where at when we heard a little thud and clang form something underneath the vehicle. I could not find anything wrong, so no problems. But that was when I am sure my oil filter
wrench came off the filter. It had been on there for at least three-four weeks or so I guess.
#3. Back to the oil filter change. I tightened the inside drain nut with the 3/8" drive extension enough to go ahead and get the filter off. I said good, now I can change the oil and get a wrench later.
#4. As I was cleaning and inspecting the plastic filter housing, I found a pretty deep gash in the bottom side corner of the housing. So now I know I can not put this back on and worry about
that until next oil change. Called the Toyota dealer parts and $46.48 later I have one on order to pick up next Tuesday. Update; I canceled the order and ordered a metal one from E-bay at $30.00 including priority mail.
#5. So with all this said now, and I now hope to have your sympathies. Please help me. I need someone to give me the correct size oil filter wrench to order. Please give me a link to get it. (Toyota wrench from dealer,a ridiculous $49.00)
Frustrated in Kentucky, trying to get the oil changed. When it rains sometimes it pours. 2009 Toyota Rav 4 with 4 cylinder engine. Wrench for the spin on oil filter housing for the filter cartridge. Is it the 64 mm x 14 flutes ???  :wall :wall

Wrench I used CTA no 2465. The filter housing in l-4 made of plastic. But i noticed, housing from v6 made from from metal, probably aluminum or steel. Are they interchangable or not? Does anybody know?
Thank you, leorav4

I have had some bad experiences with changing oil in our 2009 RAV4 Sport I4 also. Finding an oil wrench that fit was difficult. Most are too "tall", because most are the two sizes-in-one type. They would not go on far enough. One dealership gave me the phone number of a Matco Tools driver. They told me this is where they get their filter
wrenches for the dealership mechanics. I met the driver at a parking lot and purchased one. Seemed fine, but the wrench got extremely stuck on the oil filter element housing. I banged it so hard that the inside anti-drain back spring fell apart. So there I am....the car up on ramps, all oil drained, but no way to put element back on and refill with oil. Took housing to dealership...they could not put it back together. We were leaving to drive from Ohio to Yellowstone the next day.
Luckily the next day was the day for a special shipment they get twice a week from Cincinnati, so I was able to get a new filter element housing. Found out the other Toyota dealership in town sells a much cheaper wrench. They purchase a "two-in-one" metal filter, cut it down, repaint it, then sell it in their parts department. It is made by Imperial (IF-6714 65/67mm 14 flutes). This wrench works great!!!!! And it doesn't get stuck!!!
I hate the filter element design.
I hate the
Toyota design of the element housing.
I hate the fact that Toyota doesn't give a care about an owner who does their own oil changes.
Poor design. Poor customer support on this issue.
Time to go back to the drawing board, Toyota.
