Sadly, the Z650 RS misses out on the promotion

After the 2022 Versys 650, the other two bread winners of the Kawasaki India family - Ninja 650 and Z650 - will finally get traction control for 2023. It’s a small yet necessary update, which should give these long-serving models of Kawasaki another gust of tailwind.

The two middle-weights will now feature a three-stage traction control system. The KTRC (Kawasaki Traction Control) system will allow two levels of intervention and can be turned off in the third setting. It misses out on an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) module; hence, it will not be a lean-sensitive system.

Both bikes will continue to be powered by the same 649cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin motor, and the underpinnings go unchanged too. Instrumentation on both motorcycles is a TFT, the same unit as on the new Versys 650 with Bluetooth compatibility.

The Kawasaki 650 lineup has helped the Japanese marque to amass a huge fan base and clientele in India. With all three models - Versys 650, Ninja 650 and Z650 - now evenly equipped, they just about scrape through to be future proof. That said, the retro-themed Z650 RS misses out on the update.

Like on the 2022 Versys 650, a price hike is expected for the new updates. The 2023 Ninja 650 and the Z650 retail in the UK at starting prices of GBP 7,649 (Rs 6.99 lakh) and 7,399 (Rs 6.76 lakh) respectively. That’s a premium of GBP 50 more than the 2022 models.

In India, however, the Ninja 650 and Z650 currently retail at Rs 6.95 lakh and Rs 6.43 lakh (ex showroom) respectively, and we expect a bump of Rs 15,000 over those prices.

Kawasaki has released in India the latest variant of their fully faired middle-weight sports bike, the Kawasaki Ninja 650 which gets updated for its 2022 variant. Sibling to the Z650, Kawasaki's naked-streetfighter offering based on the same middleweight engine, the Ninja 650 gets few updates this year besides a compelling new colour scheme. So, what's the 2022 Kawasaki Ninja 650 all about? Read on to find out.

Exterior Details

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 received its major design update in 2020 when it received design cues inspired by the Japanese automaker's flagship, the Ninja H2. As it happens, after the Ninja H2, Kawasaki's entire range of fully-faired motorcycles received an updated face similar to the flagship bike. The Ninja 650 included, received a new for its latest variant. This year, however, the bike gets new colour schemes, and little else since its biggest updates came last year.

Engine & Transmission

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 and its naked sibling get the same engine in its unchanged state. The BS6 compliant 649cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine powers both beasts as it puts down 68PS at 8000rpm and 64Nm of peak torque at 6700rpm. The engine is mated to a manual six-speed transmission and gets dual-channel ABS as standard.

Handling

Handling the Kawasaki Ninja 650 is the same setup as its fairing-less sibling. The bike gets 41mm telescopic forks with a preload-adjustable rear monoshock. For braking, the bike gets twin 300mm petal discs on the front and a 220mm disc on the rear.

Features

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 gets the same features as its sibling motorcycle and lacks any major updates this year. The bike gets full-LED treatment and is controlled by a 4.3-inch TFT display. The bike gets dual-channel ABS as the only electronic rider aid. The display does get smartphone connectivity complete with rider data and music controls, connectable over Bluetooth through Kawasaki's Rideology app.

Price & Variants

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 gets only a standard variant in India and two colour schemes. The Kawasaki Ninja 650 is priced starting at ₹6.61 lakhs (Ex-Showroom) and comes in a Lime Green colour scheme, as well as a new colour scheme called Pearl Robotic White. The bike also gets a KRT Edition with updated Kawasaki Racing Team's livery, but its latest variant fails to enter the Indian market so far.
