Thermostats are crucial for the comfort of our home as they control our HVAC system’s operation. Many people skip paying attention to the thermostat and wonder why their heating system isn’t running. Sometimes, it’s simply because they haven’t replaced the old batteries on the thermostat with a new one.

Learning to replace the batteries in the thermostat isn’t complicated; anyone can do it by following some simple steps.

The primary function of batteries inside the thermostat is to save any setting in case of a short power outage so that the heating and cooling system doesn’t stop operating. Your digital thermostat will probably inform you that the battery level is low on the display and the batteries will die if you don’t replace them with a new one. When you see a black display screen, the thermostat will already stop and so will your heating and cooling system. When there are no temperature commands, the heating and cooling system won’t be able to respond and operate.

We remind you that you should always check out the owner’s manual. Even if the following steps are helpful for most American Standard thermostats, you should always double-check with the manual.

  • When the Lo Battery indicator is flashing, you need to replace the batteries. Don’t postpone the replacement. You will need three fresh AAA alkaline batteries.
  • Pull the thermostat from the wall plate. Use gentle moves to wiggle the mounting plate and see if it’s firmly attached to the wall. If it’s loose, use a screwdriver to release it.
  • Check out the thermostat and examine the batteries. You might have to use the screwdriver to pry the battery or remove the cover gently.
  • Pay attention to the plus and negative signs for AA and AAA batteries. Insert the fresh batteries in the designated slot.
  • Align the screw blocks with the pins on the back of the thermostat
  • Push the thermostat right onto the wallplate until you hear how it snaps into place

Some tips

Even if replacing the batteries in your American Standard thermostat is instead a straightforward process, some tips are always helpful:

  • Replace the batteries when you notice the LO battery flashing in the display. Typically, the LO battery indicator will flash in the show one month before the batteries run down entirely.
  • Always use new fresh AAA alkaline batteries. If you use non-alkaline batteries, it’s essential to know that they don’t last as long as alkaline models. Additionally, they can leak, which can affect the thermostat.
  • Change the thermostat every year on a scheduled date. Many people do it on the first day of the fall season, but you can pick whichever date you want.
