Do You Have To Be Gifted A Tarot Deck?

As a Tarot reader and deck designer, I’m often asked: Do you have to be gifted a Tarot deck? While it’s wonderful to give or receive a Tarot deck as a gift, you can absolutely buy one for yourself!

Here is the number one reason why you should buy your own Tarot deck.

A good way to look at it is that the universe wants to get the right cards into your hands. Sometimes that means you buy them for yourself. What you don’t want to do is wait to start using the cards because you think someone else has to decide for you!

Especially as women, I think it’s a good idea not to wait for another person to give you something that you want. The most important thing is that you connect and resonate with the Tarot deck that you want to use.

Here are some tips on what to look for when choosing a Tarot deck for yourself (or someone else, you can still gift too!)

How To Choose a Tarot Deck for Yourself

  • Cards. Make sure the Illustrations are intuitive and pleasing to your eye. The SparkTarot deck has diverse, feminine and easy-to-understand imagery.
  • Guidebook. The guidebook should provide information on what the cards mean so you can use the deck right away. The SparkTarot guidebook shows you each card, gives the meaning and provides you a spread to get started with.
  • Box. This is more important than you may think! My favorite—and the one I used for the SparkTarot® deck—is a sturdy two-piece box.

Don’t wait for the perfect deck to be given to you. Take charge of your own happiness. You are much more likely to use a Tarot deck if it’s one you love.

Can you read your own tarot cards everyday?

Slowly, I began to realize that while the tarot itself is a wonderful tool, I don't recommend reading your own tarot cards. Pulling one card each morning, as many do, is absolutely fine (and totally lovely!) because this practice is intended to give you a theme to meditate on throughout your day.
