Double Eagle Very Rare 20 Year Old 3rd Edition is a masterfully crafted new addition to the Eagle Rare family. Each barrel is discriminately selected to offer a bourbon that lives up to its name with its lofty, distinctive taste experience. This very limited 20-year-old bourbon whiskey lives up to its name, maturing twice as long as our standard Eagle Rare 10-year-old bourbon and featuring two beautifully-sculpted crystal glass eagles in the Double Eagle decanter. A true collectors’ item, Double Eagle Very Rare is presented in a luxurious silver box and crystal decanter. Very few bottles were produced, with an individually-numbered letter of authenticity included with each.

Buffalo Trace’s quite popular Eagle Rare bourbon normally comes in two flavors – the regular 10 year old and the once a year 17 year old from the Antique Collection. Joining these two in recent years has been a very limited and higher end bottling known as Double Eagle Very Rare Bourbon. It has now returned for a 2021 release.

The Double Eagle Very Rare Bourbon (2021) offering, according to those behind it, is the third in the series that first started back in 2019. It continues the standard theme of this bourbon, being 20 years old and having aged on the lower floors of Buffalo Trace’s historic warehouses. Where it does vary somewhat is in the proof, being 101 this time around, in what’s described as a “nod to the original proof of Eagle Rare Bourbon when it was first released in 1975.”

Also, as normally accompanies this American whiskey, it is “bottled in a luxurious crystal decanter and arrives in a silver presentation box. The presentation box consists of two sliding doors, imprinted with a design similar to eagle feathers. The sliding doors open to a spotlight of the stunning, hand-blown crystal decanter, which features two sculptured crystal glass eagles, one inside of the bottle and one serving as the stopper.”

Only 199 of these bottles, each priced around $2,000 per 750 ml bottle, were produced and each bottle includes an individually numbered letter of authenticity noting it is from this specific collection. It will come available starting this month. Official tasting notes from the brand make mention of “a nose of dark cherries and creamy caramel, on the palate, dark chocolate, smoked oak and dates, followed by a long, complex finish of cinnamon, anise and oak.”

The Eagle Rare brand, for those unfamiliar with it, is distilled, aged and bottled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Named after America’s emblem, Eagle Rare was created in 1975, as the United States prepared to celebrate its bicentennial of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
