  PG-13 | action | 2 HR 14 MIN | 2017

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald's plans of raising pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The only positive thing that has come out of this worldwide pandemic is that it has provided me with opportunities to revisit some of my favorite stories and discuss/debate about them with my family since, for once, our crazy schedules finally coincide.

By the end of June my father decided to watch "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" which came out in theaters back in 2018. I have fond memories of this movie. I went to see on opening night with my friend Ever, and later again with my family. I remember feeling pretty glad and impressed by the film. My only complaint was about the big reveal at the end.

I still enjoy the film, but rewatching it made me curious as to why people in general didn't like it. So, I decided to not only see and read a bunch of reviews but also read the screenplay -I originally refused to buy it because I was told I didn't include any extra material.

The screenplay provides a little bit of clarity on some scenes and I was able to identify some of the changes made. I would love to read the original version of the script tho given how it seems that a lot of scenes were cut out (I am basing this on the trailers).

Let's start with what I liked:
1. They tried to do something different - While not necessarily something new in the Harry Potter franchise, this film attempted to do something different from its previous installment. I find that commendable since the film followed a completely different approach to the first film: it was darker, showed us more beasts, showed us another setting.

2. Newt and Tina: Newt is a fantastic character. I love how quirky and average he is. I love Tina also. And I loved every single scene of them together. Rowling (and the actors) were able to convincingly show the chemistry between them.

3. Jacob: I was so happy to see that Jacob was not just left in the first film.

4. Grindelwald: I was glad that we finally got to see Grindelwald as a villain. And I love how different he is from Voldemort. While Voldemort was blunter and violent, Grindelwald is a master manipulator and I think that makes him a bigger and scarier threat.

Now to what I didn't like:
1. The Crimes of Grindelwald - There are no crimes being committed in this film. Except on the opening scene. Other than that, Grindelwald only manipulated people and gave speeches. This might be the reason that...

2. There isn't a lot of action - The story really feels like a lot of back and forth where nothing happens. Upon reading the script without the special effects and the music and all, I felt like we never got to a climax. The story just ends before it begins. It truly feels like the first half of an incomplete movie.

3. Too many characters - The story tried to introduce a lot of new characters and have each of them follow different storylines and then tie them up at the end. But the problem was that other than Grindelwald, none of them are fleshed out. Arguably, Leta has the strongest storyline of the film but the way it was presented and her limited screen time really reduce the impact of her death at the end. Also, she was hyped all the way back to the previous film and she just dies.

4. Yusuf, Nagini, Credence, Dumbledore, Grimson, Theseus - There was no need for any of these characters to appear. Yusuf's storyline was unnecessary and could have been given to Leta to tell the story of Corvus. Nagini was completely pointless. Credence storyline was underwhelming. You mean to tell me that Credence, the big twist in the first film and Grindelwald's secret weapon, the character around the entire mystery was built, only wondered around Paris with Nagini and didn't get his answer??? Also where the hell did Grimson come from??? And Theseus! He was so underused.

5. Queenie - I really liked her character in the first film but she did a complete 180 in this one. First, she roofied Jacob, kidnaped him, made him feel bad that he THOUGHT she was crazy, and just joins sides with the Acolytes without any reason.

6. Dumbledore - Don't get me wrong, I loved seeing him. My problem is that the series protagonist is NEWT SCAMANDER, yet the entire conflict is about defeating Grindelwald whose plan is to kill Dumbledore. They are using Newt to tell Albus's story when they should tell his own (we already know Dumbledore's story from Deathly Hallows).

7. The big twist, the big revelation at the end makes zero sense, and it is 100% likely a lie. Which means that film solved zero conflicts. All of the previous Harry Potter entries (including the infamous Cursed Child) brought closure to the book's mystery. Here the mystery wasn't even answered.

Author: J. K. Rowling
Rating: 3/5 stars - A story without an ending.
