How to Make the Perfect Salmon in Foil:

You can easily grill your salmon directly on the grill, but we like cooking it in the foil. Cooking food in foil is one of my favorite ways to grill.

  • It keeps Salmon Moist – Grilling the Salmon in foil keep the salmon from drying out. The Salmon always comes out tender, juicy and flaky. Just the way Salmon should be.
  • Add Seasoning to Foil – I like to add the lemon, butter and the other ingredients directly to the foil. We feel like the salmon is more flavorful as the Salmon cooks directly with the seasoning.
  • No Sticking – When cooking the Salmon in the foil there is no fear that your salmon is going to stick the grill. Salmon stays covered in the foil, so need to worry about the Salmon falling through the grill grates.

How Long to Grill Salmon in Foil:

Cooking Salmon doesn’t take long when cooked in a foil pack. The foil locks in the flavor to allow the salmon to cook quickly. It takes about 15 minutes to fully cook the salmon.

To make sure the salmon is cooked fully, I used an instant read meat thermometer. This is to make sure that the salmon was cooked to a safe internal temperature. Insert meat thermometer into the thickest part of the salmon.

When the salmon cooks in the foil packet, it remains a light pink color so this is why we unwrap the foil packet and allow it to cook with the salmon exposed.

About Carrie

How long does salmon need to be on the grill?

Brush the grill with oil to prevent sticking. Place salmon skin-side up and close the grill lid. Grill salmon for 6-8 minutes. Carefully flip the salmon and cook for another 6-8 minutes until the salmon is just cooked through and flakes easily.

How do you cook salmon on a gas grill with aluminum foil?

Brush it with olive oil and season it (more on that below). Close the packet and seal it up. Grill 6 minutes with the foil packet closed. Then open the foil packet and grill 1 to 5 more minutes with the foil open, until the salmon is tender and pink or the internal temperature reads 125 to 130F at the thickest part.

How long does it take to grill salmon and at what temperature?

Cooking temperature and time Heat the grill to high, about 450 to 500ºF (232 to 260ºC) before adding the fish. The goal is to sear the salmon filet quickly on both sides without drying the flesh out. Grilled fish cooks very quickly and needs less than 10 minutes in a lid closed barbecue, depending on the thickness.

How do you know when salmon on the grill is done?

The easiest way to see if your salmon has finished cooking is to gently press down on the top of the fillet with a fork or your finger. If the flesh of the salmon flakes—meaning, it separates easily along the white lines that run across the fillet (strips of fish fat)—it's finished cooking. Take it off of the heat!
