   How Much To Feed A Puppy?

   I'm sure this has been a thread before and I apologize if it's a re-thread. I've gone through numerous pages on the net and found a huge variation in the opinion of how much I should be feeding my 10 week old BT. Right now we're giving him a 1/2 cup in the AM and a half cup again in the late afternoon. Sometimes he eats it all right away, other times he'll consume it over 2 to 3 hours. We've also been giving him the tiny all natural puppy treats for his good deeds while we're crate training. He seems to be thriving without any regurgitation but he almost looks as though he may be getting a bit chubby. He's active and playful...between naps. His bowels are moving regularly and believe it or not ...his gas isn't all that bad either. How much do all of you feed you BTs?

   Seems to be working. I'm feeding my 9 week old BT half a cup in the morning and half at night. She's active but also likes to sleep or lay down in the grass a lot.

   I also have a chihuahua and when she was a puppy she was lethargic at times. Our vet had us give her Nutrical and she was fine after that. It basically gave her sugar because she had low blood sugar. We think she's diabetic.

   It really depends on what brand of food you are feeding to start with, then take the suggested amount on the high/low level based on the activity level of your pup.

   So what brand of food are you feeding??

   Yes, like Foxy says, it makes a big difference depending on the food you're feeding. Higher quality foods are more nutritionally dense and require you to feed a lot less.

   Hey! Remember to ask your vet. How much to feed your puppy has tons to do with how old she is and how much she weighs. Is she in good health? If your puppy is underweight or having trouble of any kind your vet may suggest free feeding for a while.

   Can't stress enough that this is a suggestion your vet should be making.

   If you do that I wouldn't take their advice on what to eat. They may know how much to eat but they are most likely going to give you the wrong nutritional information as far as brands and such. It really comes down to age, size, and activity level of your dog. I think if you give us some more information we can help out a little more. What's the size of your dog, how old is your dog, how much exercise do they get, and what food are you feeding them?

   Thanks for the responses everyone. Sawyer right now is about 7 to 8 lbs...(Give or take a lb as I'm guessing.) He 's 10 weeks old. We are currnetly feeding him Iams puppy food. This is what the breeder was feeding him and he seems to be doing okay on it but we would be willing to switch if this is not a good food. He is very energetic and loves to tear around the back yard ....BT 500 and enjoys interacting with us with his toys. His energetic spurts usually last about an hour before he hits the wall and needs a puppy nap.... or he gets scolded for biting and acts dejected. Overall he seems to be doing great but I just don't want to overfeed him so he winds up fat before he's even an adult dog. He sees the vet on Thursday for booster shots and check up and I will see what the vet suggests at that time as well.

   We feed our 12 week old BT 1/3 cup twice a day. He's currently 8.1 pounds. I feed a grainless kibble - Natural Balance Potato and Duck (was fed by the breeder). I'm slowly switching to Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream (also grainless) because it rates as high on http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/, I can get it closer to my house, and it's cheaper. Both foods are good ones. I'd avoid letting your puppy get pudgy. It's hard to get them to lose weight once they've put it on, and it causes health problems down the road. You should be able to feel, but not see their ribs if they're at a good weight.

    Just keep in mind that your vet is NOT a nutritionist and will steer you to some pretty nasty lines of food--Hills, Purina and Royal Canin. Dogfoodanalysis.com as previously stated is a GREAT place to start.

    If your pup looks and acts fine, I wouldn't worry. A lot about feeding is watching your dog. You back off the food if they gain too much, add more if they are thin and hungry. I always could tell Truman's growth spurts--he'd be starving and it was hard to get him enough food to keep him with the body condition I liked.

    According to the feeding guidelines from Iams you should be feeding 2 1/4-2 1/2 cups per day....

    If you are willing to consider a better food then you should start with dogfoodanalysis.com as suggested. There are also a lot of food brand threads here if you browse around a little.

    My pup is on Orijen which is a premium grain free food and he gets about 1 cup per day, with a better quality of food you don't have to feed as much.
