Supercars and exotic vehicles are known for their high sticker prices. The cheapest Lambo starts at $210,180.

Supercar prices also translate into super expensive maintenance. Maintaining a Lambo is no different. 

The average Lamborghini oil change cost is $800 but can range anywhere from $300 to $1200. This is higher than an average car’s oil change cost of $35 to $75.  

Most of the difference is due to labor costs. It simply takes longer to change the oil. Still, the parts and materials (oil and filter) are also more expensive than regular cars.

The total oil change cost varies based on where you get the oil change done and your service level. 

DIY options could be as low as $200, while a Lamborghini dealership could charge $1000+. Lamborghini doesn’t publically post these amounts, so it takes some shopping around to get the best deal. This will often be pointless since you probably only have one dealership near your location anyway since there are only 34 Lambo dealers in the USA.

It takes longer.

The Huracan has eight oil drain bolts!

It sounds easy. Just drain the oil out and fill it back up with fresh oil.

But not so fast. In reality, there are many steps required even to access the drain plugs.

Also, many things can go wrong with the Lambo oil change. And a single mistake could cost you thousands of dollars.

Here is a brief list of the oil change procedure to illustrate how many steps are required:

• Warm the car up to operating temperature
• Remove oil filter
• Raise the car, avoiding damaging the carbon fiber frame
• Remove undertray panels (many Torx bolts and clips)
• Remove eight drain bolts in the correct order
• Let each hole drain until empty
• Replace drain bolts and washers and torque each to spec
• Lower car
• Replace oil filter
• Fill with the correct amount of recommended oil
• Warm the car up and follow the oil check procedure, adding when necessary
• Raise car
• Double-check for leaks before reassembling lower covers

Before you can even access the oil drain plugs, you need to remove the car’s three protective and aerodynamic undertray covers held on by 57 bolts and clips.

Each drain bolt must be carefully removed and allowed to drain as much as possible. You will need 5 different tools to remove the bolts. If it were my car, I would let it drip overnight.

Each bolt must be carefully reinstalled and torqued. The drain bolts have special crush washers. They need to be replaced with new ones after being tightened one time. So purchase these in advance from Lamborghini.

Contrast this process with regular cars that have one drain bolt for the engine oil. The average car could have its oil drained and replaced in 10 minutes.

Even checking the oil on a Lambo takes longer. The procedure calls for warming the engine up and revving it to 2000 rpm for several minutes, then turning the car off and waiting before checking the dipstick. The dry-sump lubrication system is quite a bit different from your average car.

All of the above steps contribute to the higher cost of an oil change on a Lamborghini. A Lambo oil change takes longer than normal, and time is money – especially when Lamborgini dealerships charge a premium hourly rate.

More expensive oil

The oil and filter are more costly than the average car. Lamborghini recommends a Castrol Full Synthetic oil that is significantly more expensive than conventional motor oils. 

Lamborghinis also require a greater volume of oil. The Huracan has a dry fill oil capacity of 11.8 liters, two to three times as much as a Toyota Camry, according to Engineswork.

Some owners opt to switch to ultra-premium oil such as Redline or Mobil 1. The bottom line is that nobody is looking for an oil sale at AutoZone. A car that is more expensive than some homes needs to use the best of the best.

Expect that purchasing just the oil will cost you approx $150+.

Lamborghini recommends other services and inspections

Sometimes, your Lambo needs more than an oil change.

According to Lamborghini Dallas, at the 2-year service interval or 18000 miles, your Lambo needs an oil change plus the following:

• Engine Coolant
• Spark Plugs
• Inspect/replace Vbelt and Tensioner
• Pollen Filters
• Brake Fluid

At the 3-year or 27000 mile service, your Lambo needs the gearbox oil and engine oil/filter replaced.

So these extra items need to be factored in. They will contribute to both the bill and the time the service takes.

You can’t skip any maintenance when you drive a $200k+ car.

Should you change your own oil?

Probably not. One of the costliest things that can happen to a supercar is a mistake when fixing it. A mistake can turn saving a few hundred dollars into thousands in damage and additional expense.

You could also devalue the car by not having a complete service history.

A service history showing that maintenance was faithfully performed at the Lamborghini dealership will always look good to a prospective buyer. On the flip side, some buyers will not be interested in a vehicle that lacks service history or may see the car as higher risk and lower value.

Once you have more experience owning Lambos, you develop relationships with local experts. You can often get work much cheaper than at the dealership. As your Lambo starts to age and is off warranty, you probably don’t want the dealer touching it in most cases.

But during the warranty period, you might be better off paying the $800-$1000 to have your Lambos oil changed at the dealership.

Final Thoughts

So oil changes are more expensive on Lambos, but they are nowhere near as bad as some say.

Others will tell you that you can’t afford it if you have to ask how much a Lambo oil change costs. I find this answer to be super annoying and lazy.

Even if someone can’t afford a Lambo, half the fun of supercars is just knowing and learning about all the crazy specs and details.
