How often to change oil subaru outback

The manual of my 2018 says every 6k.

Can you go longer with full synetic? Yeah, but it's more about program compliance. Will you always get it done at 7k, and not push it to 7.5, 8, 9, 10k miles before forgetting? Are you taking it to some quick lube place who will only change the oil and not the filter? And are they using good filters designed to go longer mileage, or is it some cheap crap?

Most importantly you need to inspect the oil from time to time. Is it still full? Boxers love burning oil. Has it turned black or does it still look like oil?

I do mine every 5k miles since it's really easy to know when ones due. And since I do it myself it only costs like $40. Then every 1 or 2k miles I'll check the oil level and color to make sure it's good.

Drivers in the Los Angeles, Ca area can schedule an oil change right from their home at Subaru of Glendale. The oil change is the most basic service you can give your Subaru, but it also constitutes one of the most important. Over time, the oil in your car eventually degrades, and the filter wears down at the same time. As the oil turns to sludge and your oil filter wears down, it can cause long-term damage to your engine, necessitating more expensive and time-consuming repairs. You can schedule a Subaru Oil Change directly from the convenience of your own home!

Get Your Oil Changed On-Time

Your first oil change should get scheduled sometime around 3,000-3,500 miles. Around this time, the engine is going through its “breaking in” period, so the oil and filter might degrade faster. However, after your first oil change, you should only need to schedule one every 6,000-7,000 miles. Most modern Subaru models run on a synthetic oil blend, with extra additives to preserve its lifespan, over conventional oils of the past.

While we have your Subaru here, you can rest assured it remains in good hands. Our Subaru technicians are factory-trained with specialized experience in this brand. Who better to give your Subaru an oil change than someone who knows these cars best? Our parts center comes fully-stocked with genuine Subaru oil filter replacements, and the exact approved synthetic oil your new or used Subaru car in Los Angeles requires.

There’s a basic rule of thumb that you have the oil changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months, but Subaru makes an oil that specifically extends the timeline between changes. By utilizing Genuine Subaru Oil made for Subaru mechanics, the care of your vehicle is not compromised by the added time. At every visit your Subaru is serviced with the utmost care to ensure it is ready to hit the road when you leave our service center. During your break-in period, we suggest stopping in just before the 6,000 mile or 6 month mark, since this is the first time your vehicle is serviced since breaking in the motor.

Determine the Right Grade of Synthetic Oil for Your Subaru

Closeup photo of a service technician replacing the Subaru oil filter.
You may not know it, but there are different grades when it comes to synthetic oil, and our certified Subaru technicians will recommend various grades dependent on your engine size and vehicle type. We determine the semi fluidness of your oil based on friction, called viscosity. When your Subaru is equipped with a 2.5 liter BOXER® engine like inside the Subaru Outback our recommendation is to use 0w-20 synthetic oil. For the Subaru Legacy with a 3.5 liter 6-cylinder BOXER® engine we suggest 5w-30 synthetic oil, or the use of conventional oil is acceptable. If your Forester utilizes the same 2.5 liter engine as the Outback then our recommendation remains the same, but if your unique ride has a 2.0 turbo BOXER® engine for the Forester then the recommendation is 5w-30 synthetic oil. Both the Impreza and Crosstrek utilize the 0w-20 oil. With the WRX and BRZ for at least the very first change we recommend 5w-30 synthetic oil. While the process of an oil change can be simple, the specifics make it complex. There’s no one better to determine the best grade of oil for your ride than our Subaru specialists. Visit our service department today and speak to one of our helpful and knowledgeable technicians about any questions you may have.

  1. First oil change prior to 6 months or 6,000 miles (whichever comes first)
  2. Synthetic oil is strongly recommended for all Subaru engines
  3. Recommend 0W-20 for non-turbo 4-cylinder engines
  4. Recommend 5W-30 for turbo and 6-cylinder engines
  5. Check with your Nate Wade Subaru service adviser for further details
