Do you have time for a coffee break? Then let's find out together how easy it is to enable or disable the "Auto Rotate" feature on Samsung smartphones. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the "rotate screen" feature ensures that the display rotates when you use it in portrait or landscape mode.

Rotate screen on your Samsung smartphone

When you set up a Samsung smartphone, automatic screen rotation is already enabled. If this is not the case (anymore), you can easily find the function in the quick settings.

  1. Swipe down on the screen with two fingers to bring up the quick settings bar.
  2. Tap the Portrait icon so that Auto rotate screen appears.
  3. Conversely, you just need to tap Auto rotate to prevent it from switching to landscape mode when you rotate the smartphone.
  4. That's it!

Two bonus tips

Since this was really a very easy and quick tutorial, I would like to give you another tip for users of Samsung smartphones. Maybe you don't know this little trick yet: It's about the fact that you generally benefit from rotating the screen (for example, when watching YouTube and Netflix), but sometimes want to do without it.

In this case, it is annoying to have to use the quick settings every time. Fortunately, Samsung offers a way to avoid this step. Just tap on the screen and hold your finger down before rotating the screen - this will prevent the screen from rotating!

A second thing we can give you as a hat tip: Install a third-party app like Rotation Control from the Google Play Store. Unlike the on-board tools, you can use such a tool to separately determine whether each app should always be displayed in portrait or landscape mode.

That's all for today. Hopefully, we were able to help the Samsung user base with our tip. By the way, please write us in the comments if you use a third-party application for screen rotation and which one!

When this accessibility setting is on, the screen automatically rotates when you move your device between portrait and landscape position.

If you're using TalkBack, you might want to turn off auto-rotate, since rotating the screen can interrupt spoken feedback.

To change your auto-rotate setting, follow these steps:

  1. Open your device's Settings app

When surfing the web or watching a video on your Galaxy phone, you can turn your phone sideways to view content comfortably. If you want the screen of your phone to rotate horizontally or vertically automatically, follow the guide below to enable the Auto rotate feature.

Before you try the recommendations below, be sure to check if your device's software and related apps are updated to the latest version. To update your mobile device's software, follow these steps:

Step 1. Go to Settings > Software update.

Step 2. Tap on Download and install.

Step 3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Turn the Auto rotate feature on Click to Expand

Auto rotate allows your device's screen to automatically adjust and rotate depending on how you hold it. For example, if you turn your phone sideways, the screen will automatically switch to landscape mode. Follow the steps below to enable the Auto rotate feature.

Step 1. Swipe down on the screen to open the Quick panel.

Step 2. If a gray Portrait or Landscape mode icon is displayed, tap the gray icon to activate Auto rotate. The icon will glow blue when enabled.

If the Auto rotate feature is already activated, you don't need to select anything.

Note: If the app you are using doesn't support an orientation, it will not change when you rotate your phone. Not all apps work in both Portrait and Landscape mode.

Lock the screen in Portrait or Landscape mode Click to Expand

Portrait mode holds the screen upward and Landscape mode holds the screen sideways. Both icons look like locks and are gray when enabled. When the screen is locked in Portrait or Landscape mode, the screen no longer rotates when you rotate your phone.

When you tap the active blue Auto rotate icon, the icon will switch to a gray Landscape or Portrait mode and the screen will stay that way (upward or sideways).

How to add the screen orientation icon to the Quick panel Click to Expand

If you cannot find the Auto rotate icon or the Portrait/Landscape mode icon, it may have been disabled by mistake. It is very easy to add icons back to the Quick panel. Follow the steps below to add the Auto rotate icon to the Quick panel.

Step 1. Swipe down on the screen to open the Quick panel.
Tap More options (the three vertical dots).

Step 2. Tap Edit buttons.

Step 3. Find the Auto rotate icon, and then drag it to your desired position on the Quick panel.

Step 4. Tap Done. Now the icon will be easy to reach and you can adjust your screen orientation accordingly.

How to make your Home screen rotate sideways Click to Expand

The Home screen does not rotate to landscape mode by default, but if you prefer to view your phone sideways, you can set the Home screen to landscape mode. Follow the steps below to set your Home screen rotation.

Step 1. Launch the Settings app, and then tap Home screen.

Step 2. Tap the switch next to Rotate to landscape mode.

Step 3. Now, the Home screen will also rotate to landscape mode, once you turn your phone sideways.
