Hello and happy Thursday! If you need some pep in your step today, I have just the thing for you: An Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Espresso Latte! So here’s a little story for you. The other day I saw a Tik Tok video of a girl who works at Starbucks making their new drink – a brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso – which supposedly launches in 2 weeks. Well, I got way too excited and decided I need the drink NOW. So, I hopped into the kitchen and got to work. Homemade brown sugar syrup? Check. Shaken espresso? Now that I know what that is, check. Oat milk? Always check. Always have oat milk in this house!

Basically, this drink is what dreams are made of. The brown sugar syrup is super easy and not only contains all that delicious brown sugar flavour, there’s also vanilla and cinnamon in there. Also, don’t let the fancy name scare you. Shaken espresso is literally just espresso with a few ice cubes, plus the syrup, shaken vigorously until foamy. Its pretty cool! Then, just add it all to your cup and top with oat milk. Thats it!

You can make a double batch or even quadruple batch of the syrup and just keep it in a jar in the fridge. That way you can make these all week and it will be faster than driving to your closest Starbucks! Now, I’m sure this recipe isn’t exact, as I haven’t actually tried the drink yet (patience is not my strong suit) but I can safely say this drink is GOOD. So go ahead and treat yourself today! Its almost Friday and this coffee will get ya through. Promise!

PLEASE NTOE: This post has been updated on March 23, 2021 to make the syrup recipe slightly more runny. I created this recipe before I tried the Starbucks version and a reader brought it to my attention that the syrup was thicker than Starbucks and after trying the Starbucks version, it I do agree. I simply updated the recipe to add more water and less cook time, resulting in a less thick syrup which is easier to work with in iced coffee drinks! Thanks for your support always! xo Liv

Description

Homemade brown sugar syrup with cinnamon and vanilla, espresso shaken with ice and its all topped with creamy oat milk.

Scale

Ingredients

Brown Sugar Syrup:

  • 4 tbsp lightly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Lattes:

  • 2 double shots of espresso
  • a mason jar or cocktail shaker with a few ice cubes
  • 2 glasses filled half way with ice
  • oat milk (as much as you need to top up the cup)

  1. In a small frying pan or pot on the stove, add the syrup ingredients and heat on medium-high, whisking to combine. Once it starts simmering, lower the heat to medium-low and simmer about 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until sugar has completely dissolved and syrup has thickened just slightly. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  2. Brew two shots of espresso or about 1/2 cup of very strong coffee. Add to the mason jar with 3 tbsp of syrup and a few ice cubes and shake vigorously for about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add some more ice to each glass. Divide the espresso mixture between the glasses. Add oat milk to top it up. Stir and enjoy!

Can you add cold foam to shaken espresso?

I like to top my shaken espresso drinks with cold foam. I make my cold foam in a milk frother on the cold setting. If you do not have a milk frother you can use these other methods for making cold foam: Handheld milk frother – whisk the cold milk in a jar with a hand whisk.

Is the brown sugar Oatmilk shaken espresso sweet?

The brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso is a drink from Starbucks that isn't overly sweet. You can definitely taste the espresso, with a finishing flavor of dark sugar and cinnamon. The plus of making this drink at home is that you can customize the drink to your liking - more or less sweetness, cinnamon, or oatmilk.
