So Post Malone covered Only Wanna Be With You by Hootie and the Blowfish, and yes, we were just as confused as you were. The songs great, but read on to discover the potential meaning of the song choice.

On Thursday, February 25th, Post Malone released his exclusive cover for Pokemon’s 25th anniversary. The track is a cover of Hootie and the Blowfish’s Only Wanna Be With You.

Titled the ‘Pokémon 25 Version’ the cover is a guitar version of the song and includes various Pokémon video game sound effects. In fact, it actually samples the Ecruteak City Theme from Pokémon Gold and Silver.

But that’s about where the obvious links begin and end.

So, why did Post Malone cover Only Wanna Be With You?

Fans have been praising the song itself, but many have been left confused by it too:

“Why did Post Malone cover Hootie and The Blowfish? Why is it called the Pokémon 25 Version? Why did he replace the lyric ‘The Dolphins make me cry’ with ‘The Cowboys make me cry’? Why is actually a little bit good?” asked one on Twitter.

There might not be any obvious meaning to the choice, but the logical one is that of nostalgia. Of course Pokémon is a 90s institution and Hootie and the Blowfish were a 90s phenomenon. In fact, Only Wanna Be With You released in 1995, just a year before Pokémon was released in 1996.

As for the lyric changes, that seems to simply be an artistic choice. Well, Post Malone’s favourite team is the Dallas Cowboys, which is why he swapped the Miami Dolphins for them.

It’s 1990s all over again, only this time it’s the Cowboys and not the Dolphins that are making musicians cry.

In one of the more random covers in recent memory, Post Malone has put his take on Hootie and the Blowfish’s hit “Only Wanna Be With You.” The artist, born Austin Post, is a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and switched the lyric "I’m such a baby ‘cause the Dolphins make me cry” to "The Cowboys make me cry."

Of course in the original video from over 25 years ago, Hall of Fame Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino actually appeared alongside singer Darius Rucker. The jersey Rucker wore in the video is signed by Marino and framed in his house. “Only Wanna,” which wasn’t officially released as a single until 1995, appeared on the band’s debut album, “Cracked Rear View.”

As for Rucker’s response to the cover – well, he thought it was a touchdown.

“The smile in my face will not leave for a long time,” Rucker tweeted about Post Malone’s version. “This is awesome.”

Rucker knows a thing or two about great covers. He won a Grammy for his rendition of “Wagon Wheel.”

But of all songs, why did Malone’s pick this one? Because "the original record was last on the Billboard charts 25 years ago and Post recorded his version to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pokémon," according to a release. The video game and card franchise will mark its birthday with “Pokémon Day” on Saturday. A virtual concert with Malone (7 p.m. EST) will be streamed on the Pokémon YouTube and Twitch channels, along with its official website.

The cover is Malone’s first release as a lead artist since 2019’s “Hollywood's Bleeding,” which is up for album of the year at next month’s Grammys.

"Only Wanna Be with You" is a song by American alternative rock band Hootie & the Blowfish. After being included on the group's EP Kootchypop, it was released on July 18, 1995, as the third single from their breakthrough album, Cracked Rear View. It peaked at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100, number one on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart, number three on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and number two on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Internationally, "Only Wanna Be with You" topped the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart for three weeks, becoming the second-most-successful song of 1995. It also found success in Iceland, rising to number four on the Icelandic Singles Chart, and reached the top 40 in Australia and New Zealand. It is the band's signature song. In 2021, American rapper Post Malone released a cover of the song for the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise.

Content[edit]

One verse of the song describes "[putting] on a little Dylan". The verse then references songs on Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, quoting extensively from "Idiot Wind". The song then mentions "Tangled Up in Blue".[5] According to Rucker, Dylan's management were aware of the lyrics and had no problem with them; however, when the song became a hit, they objected.[6] He told Rolling Stone that "it never got to the point where we were sued... When we first did that song we sent it to the publishing company and everything was fine. We played it for years and had a really big hit with it. Then they wanted some money, and they got it."[7] VH1 reported that Dylan received an out-of-court settlement in 1995 for $350,000.[5]

Also mentioned in the bridge of the song is a reference, "I'm such a baby cause the Dolphins make me cry", alluding to Darius Rucker's favorite sports team, the Miami Dolphins.

Music video[edit]

The music video, similar to the song, had a sports theme, incorporating many elements from ESPN's SportsCenter. The video featured appearances by (then-current) SportsCenter anchors Keith Olbermann, Dan Patrick, Mike Tirico, Charley Steiner and Chris Berman, reporting on the band playing in games with several professional athletes, including Dan Marino, Fred Couples, Gary McCord, Alonzo Mourning, Muggsy Bogues, Alex English, Walt Williams, and Charles Smith.[5][8] Rucker said the video was his idea, adding, "It was just a way to meet all our idols."[9]

A portion of the music video was filmed on the Poolesville Golf Course and Potomac Valley Lodge in Poolesville, Maryland,[10] as well as on the floor of Reckord Armory at the University of Maryland.[11] Additionally, the scenes in which Rucker and Dan Marino are playing catch, were filmed on the football field of Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, Illinois.

On February 25, 2021, American rapper and singer Post Malone released a cover version for the 25th anniversary of the Japanese media franchise Pokémon.[37][38] Malone's version contains samples of music from the video games and the Dolphins reference changed to reflect him being a Dallas Cowboys fan.[39][40][41] The cover garnered attention for the unusual circumstances of its release.[40][41][42][43] Hootie and the Blowfish vocalist Darius Rucker gave his approval of the cover on Twitter.[41][44] "Only Wanna Be with You" is included on the track listing of Pokémon 25: The Album, scheduled for release in the second half of 2021 through Capitol Records.[45]
