Wonder Mail (Japanese: ふしぎなメール Wonder Mail) is a feature in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series of games. Depending on the entry, Wonder Mail can allow players to rescue each other, redeem specific missions to play, redeem Pokémon directly, or redeem items directly. These methods all usually involve inputting specific passwords. Friend RescueFriend Rescue allows players to rescue other players that have fainted in a dungeon. If a fainted player is rescued in this way, they will not be subject to the fainting penalty of losing some items from their bag. The process works as follows:
In Gates to Infinity, the Friend Rescue system instead uses StreetPass. If a player faints in a dungeon, they are able to send out a rescue request via StreetPass. Players can put up to 20 Reviver Seeds into their mailbox, and if they StreetPass a player that has requested a rescue, 1 seed will be consumed to revive that player. This is the only way to perform Friend Rescue in Gates to Infinity - all previous methods mentioned above are unavailable. In Rescue Team DX, players additionally have the option to rescue themselves, using other Pokémon they have recruited that were not part of the fainted party. Redeem MissionsIn Red and Blue Rescue Team as well as Explorers of Time and Darkness, each in-game mission has its own 24-character password that is visible in the mission description. These codes can be written down and later entered in the Wonder Mail option on the main menu to put that mission in the player's job list, although the same code can't be used twice on one save file. Special Wonder Mail codes are periodically available on Pokémon.com, which give access to unique missions or dungeons. Wonder Mail is ranked by difficulty, with the lowest difficulty being E, and the hardest being * (in Blue and Red Rescue Team), or ☆9 (in Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky). A small selection of Wonder Mail could also be found on Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection prior to its shutdown in 2014. In special circumstances, some Wonder Mail missions will not have a code at all. This applies to the Wi-Fi missions to unlock Mewtwo in Explorers of Time and Celebi in Explorers Darkness, whom are not normally available in those respective games. In Explorers of Sky, Wonder Mail instead has 34 characters, and is renamed Wonder Mail S (Japanese: ふしぎなメールS Wonder Mail S). Wonder Mail missions from its sister games Time and Darkness are unusable - however, Friend Rescue still functions, provided the Sky player requesting rescue did not faint in a Sky-exclusive dungeon. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare), special missions were available to download through WiiConnect24. In Rescue Team DX, an 8-character password system can also grant special missions, however the game looks up a distinct list of valid passwords in its data, rather than the game "decoding" any code it is given. GeneratorsIt is possible to use a Wonder Mail Generator to create a code for a mission for any reward, even one that could never happen in-game. For example, one could generate a code to rescue a Pokémon in Tiny Woods, the easiest dungeon, and receive the very valuable Friend Bow as a reward. One could also create a code to rescue someone in an easy dungeon like Beach Cave, with the reward being something one can only get in a locked door in a specific difficult dungeon, like Moltres's Fire Veil or a Golden Mask, thus bypassing the effort and challenge needed to get the item normally. The effort can be bypassed even further by setting it to "escort" for the first floor, allowing one to automatically achieve the goal the moment of entering the dungeon, and avoiding even battling any Pokémon. Wonder Mail generation can also be used as an opportunity to gain easy rescue points, and have it set to a 1-floor mission in a difficult dungeon, such as Purity Forest (a mission that could be ranked up to S difficulty). Many also use Wonder Mail generators as a way to recruit hard-to-get Pokémon with ease by picking a rare Pokémon as the client and having it join the team as reward. Like Pokésav, the legitimacy of using these generators is highly questioned. If one such generator is used to create a mission in a dungeon required for the main story, but not yet unlocked, the game will say: "That's odd. The location of this mission is dungeon. It seems to be outdated." The same message would appear for dungeons that can only be unlocked through missions (such as the Seven Treasures dungeons), if the dungeon has already been unlocked. After this message is displayed, the mission is discarded. Redeem PokémonIn Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare), it is possible to automatically recruit certain Pokémon through 16-character "Pal Passwords". This uses a distinct list of valid passwords in the game's data. Redeem ItemsStarting with Gates to Infinity, it is possible to redeem items directly through Wonder Mail by using an 8-character password. Once again, the game refers to a list of valid passwords in its data. In Super Mystery Dungeon, it is also possible to redeem items by QR Code. From Gates to Infinity onwards, the term "Wonder Mail" refers only to the above-mentioned 8-character redemption features for missions and items. The feature to rescue friends is under an entirely separate title of simply "Send/Receive Mail"SMD or the more-descriptive "Friend Rescue"RTDX. Availability
