Breeders who have done the required genetic testing and have started to or have their dogs registered with the TSCA will be noted. TSCA Breeder of Merit denotes that breeder fully complies, and litters are eligible for TSCA registration.

Request TSCA papers with your new puppy.  These can be gotten in addition to AKC/CKC papers if all testing has been completed and the parents were a good genetic match.  TSCA papers are an indication that your puppies parents have had the most modern genetic testing available and that the TSCA has a copy of those tests and has deemed this litter should not be affected by Collie Eye Anomaly, Degenerative Myelopathy, Gallbladder Mucoceles, Multidrug Resistance 1 and Von Willebrand Disease.

More about these diseases, disorders and the testing, check out Paw Print Genetics.

Are Shelties good house pets?

Shelties are fun-loving pets to have around the house, they are very smart, inquisitive and instinctive when it comes to guarding you against strangers. Grooming Shelties can be quite tedious, so if you’re someone who isn’t into all that stress, you’re advised to look for other options.

What are Shelties like as pets?

Shelties are lively dogs that are full of character, sure to keep you on your toes. They make terrific playmates and enjoy very active lifestyles. Because of their amiable nature, they make excellent travel companions and dog park candidates, too. These dogs generally get along very well with other pets, especially when they grow up together.

How many puppies do Shelties usually have?

Shelties tend to have an average litter size of 4-6 puppies. To be sure of how many puppies your bitch will have, the best thing to do is after 50 days of pregnancy (I usually recommend at 8 weeks along) have an xray taken. This will show any fetal skeletons and you will know for sure how many pups to expect.

Are Shelties loyal dogs?

The Shetland Sheepdog also called Sheltie, is a herding dog and one of the most loyal dogs you will ever find. This dog takes the tag man's best friend to another level hence earning the nickname "Shadow" due to the breed's potential to form strong bonds with family. The Shetland Sheepdog originates from the Shetland Islands in Scotland.

How much is a toy Sheltie?

Prices range from $1750-4000 depending upon registration, sex, color and size. AKC Toy Shelties are usually $1850-4000; non-AKC are usually $1750-2000.

How long do toy Shelties live?

The Sheltie has a lifespan of 12 to 14 years and may be prone to minor concerns like patellar luxation, allergies, hypothyroidism, Legg-Perthes, canine hip dysplasia, hemophilia, trichiasis, cataract, Collie eye anomaly, and progressive retinal atrophy, or a major one like dermatomyositis.

Are there teacup Shelties?

There is NO such thing as a miniature Sheltie, toy Sheltie, or teacup Sheltie, period. These terms were made up by unethical breeders trying to sell small Shelties.

Are toy Shelties healthy?

Shetland Sheepdogs are generally healthy dogs, and responsible breeders screen their stock for health conditions such as hip dysplasia, thyroid disease, eye diseases, dermatomyositis (Sheltie skin syndrome), von Willebrand's disease (vWD), gallbladder mucoceles, and epilepsy.

Do Shelties make good house dogs?

Shetland sheepdogs or Shelties are known for their gentle and sweet personality. This popular family pet likes to keep busy, functions well in small homes and is content to lie around alone all day, but still needs to be exercised. Often mistakenly called miniature collies, the Shetland sheepdog is a distinct breed.
