We recently went on an 1,800 mile road trip that included lots of highway driving, dirt road driving and 4 wheeling. The Tacoma was loaded with 400 lbs of gear in the truck bed and back seat and had sufficient power to pass vehicles on the highway. The highway mileage per gallon was showing 22 plus on my dash, and with the off road mileage included, we were able to average 18 mpg.

Pros

• Dashboard: Lots of information available at the push of a button, such as: tire pressure, mpg, miles to empty, vehicle angles on hills, etc.
• Styling: Best looking stock midsize truck on the market.
• Cargo Space: Between the long bed and rear seats, you can pack a lot of gear.

Cons

• Cabin Noise: It’s loud. Engine and road noise are too much
• Seat Comfort: Not much leg room for rear passengers.
• Interior Space: Rear seat leg room can be inadequate.

This is the second vehicle we have purchased from Carmax. I had two Tundra's in the past and loved both of them -- with one problem -- my wife hated driving them because they were too big and hard to park. The Tacoma is the right size found in another state through Carmax with the right package at the right price. We opted for the long bed which makes the truck very versatile. The bed is large enough for a 4X6 piece of plywood with the tailgate shut. The towing package makes hauling our utility trailer a breeze. The V-6 engine has excellent power. The only negative is that because the truck is smaller than a Tundra, I thought the mileage would be better. Get 18 in town -- same as Tundra.

I shopped around a long time and walked of MANY car lots before I settled on my truck. When other sellers were doing bait and switch tactics, Carmax got right to the point and I got the truck I wanted quickly. First off, the Toyota Tacoma I got is a 4 cylinder which makes it good on gas even with the AC on. I LOVE the sliding back window because I can vent the air that way (and listen for noises from tires, drive shaft, etc) and my dogs love the window too. Mine also came with a Husky toolbox which is a huge win for my active life (and my dogs love it too when camping). It can get up and go if I kick it in but I don’t need to very often. It’s steady, reliable, quiet, has a great sound system with bluetooth and Maps even shows me where I parked since I’m paired to my phone. That feature saves the day in crazy downtown areas! It’s low enough to the ground but not low enough to suck exhaust fumes. It turns tightly in forward and reverse and mine has a hitch too which I love. The tires are pretty average and this truck is easy to find parts for that are fairly inexpensive. I also love that I can check all the fluids easily and do much of my own repair since the engine has some leg room. And last, I love that mine came with tie downs in the bed and a nice liner to protect it. This lady and her dogs love her little beast!

Pros

• Cost to Maintain: Easy to find parts and they’re not too expensive.
• Technology and Entertainment: Bluetooth for calls, music, and finding my ride with Maps app in bad parking areas.
• Interior Space: I’m tall and there’s a lot of leg room as long as no one is sitting behind you in the extended cab area. There’s also plenty of room to load groceries/ animals in behind the front seats.

Cons

• Seat Comfort: The seats are a bit rigid.
• Visibility: There are some blind spots but a tiny mirror addition solves this easily.
• Cabin Noise: It is a little bit loud compared to most vehicles but it’s not a major issue really.
