Can you leave in olaplex 3 overnight

At Kapshure, we are self proclaimed product junkies, especially when it comes to hair products. However, originally Olaplex went under the radar for us because we primarily saw it being used all over social media to fix a botched bleach job. We had no idea that Olaplex No. 3 Perfector could be used on our relaxed, naturally curly, and kinky tresses. But, thankfully we eventually became believers after our first experience with Olaplex No. 3 Perfector Calling ALL Product Junkies and over time we have come up with our own tips for how to use this highly acclaimed product for hair aficionado’s like ourselves.

Let’s Talk Hair!

According to Olaplex:

Our hair contains millions of disulfide bonds. These bonds give the hair its structure, strength and stability. When disulfide bonds are broken, it results in damage. OLAPLEX restores damaged and compromised hair by repairing from the inside out with their patented single ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate. Once all the bonds are intact and in alignment, you have healthy, beautiful, shiny, touchable hair.

What Exactly does Olaplex do?

OLAPLEX works to repair broken bonds. Their patented active chemistry works on a molecular level. Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, a single molecule, dramatically improves hair strength, protects from within, and provides immediate results for all hair types.

Olaplex repairs all types of hair damage. This includes Thermal Factors: such as high levels of heat from curling irons, blow dryers, flat irons etc. Chemical Factors: like colors, perms, relaxers, and keratin treatments. Mechanical Factors: including brushing, friction, tugging and pulling on wet hair. This also includes Environmental Factors: such as UV damage from the sun, humidity, extreme hot/cold weather conditions, pollution, etc.

How Does Olaplex Work?

  • All hair types (natural, curly, fine, straight, etc.) derive most of their integrity from healthy, properly paired, disulfide bonds. When hair is damaged via thermal, chemical, mechanical or environmental factors, these disulfide bonds are broken apart resulting in single sulfur hydrogen bonds.

  • What happens after a disulfide bond breaks? There are two reactions that can take place. The first reaction is that the single sulfur hydrogen component pairs with a single oxygen molecule. This makes a perfect pair with no further damage taking place.

  • The second reaction is where damage occurs. A single sulfur hydrogen molecule will pair with three oxygen molecules creating S03, or what is known as a sulfate group. The protonated sulfate is known as Cysteic Acid. Cysteic acid then eats the protein out of the hair.

  • In the case of chemical services, OLAPLEX works by pairing with the single sulfur hydrogen bond faster than the three oxygen molecules can.

Can I Sleep In An Olaplex Treatment?

As a company, we do not recommend sleeping in OLAPLEX treatments as it could get into your eyes. However, we have received great feedback from people who have used it this way.

Kapshure’s 10-Step-Guide to using Olaplex No. 3 Perfector Overnight:

  1. We start by shampooing our hair (preferably with a sulfate free shampoo)

  2. Next we towel dry our hair (but make sure that your hair is still wet)

  3. We add Olaplex No. 3 Perfector to our wet/damp hair

  4. We pin our hair up with an alligator clip

  5. Next, we cover our hair with a plastic disposable shower cap (you can find these processing caps at any beauty supply store)

  6. We then cover our head with a Microfiber Hair Towel

  7. We leave this in overnight (your hair must remain wet throughout the entire process)

  8. In the morning while our hair is still wet we remove the microfiber towel and leave the plastic shower cap on and sit under a heating cap (we like the Gold-N-Hot Professional Conditioning Heat Cap) for about 30 minutes. Please note that Olaplex does not require heat to be effective.

  9. Then we rinse out the Olaplex No. 3 Perfector

  10. Finally, we follow up with our regular deep conditioner and sit back under the heating cap for another 30 minutes.

Step 1: Apply a generous amount to towel-dried hair and comb through. Step 2: Leave on for a minimum of 10 minutes. Keep in mind, the longer it's on, the more effective it is, especially for hair that is compromised. We've seen great results from people who leave it on 30 to 90 minutes!

Is it worth leaving OLAPLEX on overnight?

Olaplex does not recommend that you leave this product on overnight. What is this? While they acknowledge that some people have had great success doing so, it was not how the product was designed. It was not created as a leave-in treatment, so they do not recommend using it as such.
