Nitto Terra Grappler Mileage

Hey guys,

I'm going to bite the bullet tonight and get some new tires. I've read some reviews about the NTG's saying the tire life as far as miles aren't that good.

I'd like to have your good bad and ugly opinions of them. I know a lot of people run them just wanted your honest opinions.

The lifespan is about average with other AT tires...i would not buy them just because of that. BFG AT KO lasts a long time, but i would not keep them a long time because the rubber gets hard and traction decreases with age...these issues pretty much apply to all long-lasting tires. So, if you can get 40-50k miles out of an AT tire, then you should be happy.

I just put the Nitto Terra Grapplers on last week. These are my first A/T tire and am very happy with them so far. We've had a lot of rain here in VA and havent had any loss of traction what so ever. They do ride a little bit harder then the previous stock tires but I was under the impression that since it was an A/T tire it was going to do that anyway.

I'll easily see 50k from mine and I wheeel 'em and drive hard on them on the street and am very satisfied with them and will have my 2nd set by summer.

I would say between 30-50K. I say that because it depends on how hard you wheel them. Another member on here replaced his after a little under 30K because we beat the crap out of them, but as RonMaiden said, you can easily see 50K depending on your driving.

The comparable BFG KO's are supposed to last MUCH longer, but the traction and ride quality becomes so poor that you'll want to replace them long before they ever technically wear out.

I am pretty anal about rotating every 4000 miles so I'm sure that helps.

I have had many sets of BFG AT and although a tough tire HB is on the money. I had a set on explorer that I ran past 40k and I could not even begin to tell you how harsh the ride was.

My buddy is a Line X dealer and truck accessories dealer and just became a Nitto dealer .......,.

To be fair, what you and HB4x4 are describing applies to ALL tires of that age, esp. the AT and MT tires. Not so long ago, you told me how bad the REVOs were at 40k miles. And, of all the AT tires on the market, the REVOs are specifically made for longterm wear and traction!

In fact, according to some tire experts (HB4x4 not included!

The above rule applies to all brands and any type of tire because all tires are made of rubber. Rubber hardens with age and wear. Even though a tire may have a warranty to 80k miles, it does not mean that you should drive it up to that point. Yeah, it will still be functional, but at what risk to you and your family?? My Revos which is the first time I ran a tire over 40-45k EVER (ran to 51k) rode quite worse than when I got them ....started noticing it at about 40k not even close to how the BFG's rode with 40k miles . Up to about 25-30 I thought they (BFG) were good after that they started to get pretty crappy riding. Plus we were not talking about Revos we were talking about BFG crappy ride at high miles. ALL tires get that way from heat cycles , and lack of tread depth , age .

The mighty Michelins have that claim to fame of long milage , great traction , good ride. Revo does not offer anything out of the ordinary. They all claim the same crap.

The whole tire milage thing is a marketing ploy sort of , it meant as a general guide for consumers of what to expect and how the mfg. markets the tire. The ALL have their claim to fame whether fact or fiction. The mfg's can give you and get this info from testing , BUT every person does not maintain their tires the same way , road surfaces are all different , people rotate them at different mileage , run different pressures , maybe not rotate them at all , all to many variables.

Would I buy a another set of BFG's after having 15 sets of them , sure they were good tough tires , never let me down. Would I buy OR try Nitto's , FStone's , Mich's , Nokian , Coopers , sure. I'd love to try them all. I always drop hints to my Uncle to get me a set of BFG's , if he ever calls me and says take your truck over to this tire place and have them put on , I will. It nice to have a Uncle in the tire business. Out of my 15 sets of BFG's I paid for about 3 or 4 of them. Sweeeeeet!

Falls, after reading your response, i am not sure if you agreed with me or disagreed with me....

Ok, you stated initially above that the BFG rode crappy after 40k miles...then later you wrote that it rode crappy after 25-30k miles...which is it??

The reason i brought up REVOs was because REVOs are well-known to have a high-tech mixture of rubber compounds to counteract the effect of aging and wear. And yet, despite this, it still rode crappy after 40k miles, according to you. My point is that ALL tires (esp. ATs and MTs) will show considerable wear and tear (including negative effects on ride comfort) at high mileage.

In fact, if you look on the Nitto website, then you will see that the Terra Grappler (P-rated version) has a treadwear rating of 500. REVOs (P-rated) has a treadwear rating of 500. I know, treadwear rating cannot be compared between two different manufacturers. However, the ratings can be used to make approximate guess as to the lifespan of the tires. In other words, the Nittos and REVOs have similar (approximately) lifespan if everything else being equal. LT-versions of the tires have probably similar lifespan. (Of course, the reason that we cannot compare the BFG AT KO to these tires using this "approximation method" is because all BFG AT KO are LT-rated.)

Therefore, my thought process in bringing REVOs into the discussion is quite valid and logical...at least from where i am sitting!

Again, i am not defending BFG more than any other tire. Please read my initial post again. In fact, what you and Josh wrote above are an exact duplicate of my initial response in this thread!

25-30k I started noticing a difference on the BFG and naturally the more wear , the more heat cycles , the older they get. After 40k on the BFG's the fillings in my teeth started to fall out....lol. Maybe on a heavier vehicle It would not have been noticed as much. I did not notice to this extreme with the Revos , BUT , P vs C rated tire and different compound.

No matter to agree or disagree with you , just voicing my experience .

quick reply for now. may elaborate later if needed. i've had a good 45k miles on my tg's. offroad plenty of times. long road trips. drive hard. snowy/icy terrain on trip to seattle from socal just this past december. barely any tread left. only rotated them ONCE. great tire all the way to the end.

im now looking at some different tires not because they're bad but because i want to try a different at tire and be able to compare. but i would not hesitate to buy these again.
