7 easy ways to connect phone to TV without WiFi

#1: By enabling Miracast

Do this if: Both your devices support Miracast wireless connectivity.

Miracast is a screencasting feature that’s available to many smart devices. Including smartphones, smart TVs, projectors, streaming devices, cable boxes, and more.

And it comes in different names depending on the device brand, such as:

  • Smart Share.
  • AllShare Cast.
  • Screen Mirroring.
  • Display Mirroring.

“How does it work?”

Miracast uses WiFi-direct technology to wirelessly transfer audio and video signals.

Note: WiFi-direct is completely different from the typical WiFi connection we know.

In simple terms, WiFi-direct creates a connection directly between two devices. This means that it doesn’t require the use of a third-party device such as a “router” to work.

And although there’s “WiFi” in its name, it doesn’t require a WiFi connection at all.

(I hope it doesn’t confuse you!)

Anyway…

Enabling Miracast is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to connect your phone to a TV.

Since all you have to do is enable the Miracast setting on your phone and TV. And pair your devices.

But here’s the catch: Your phone and smart TV should both have a built-in Miracast feature. Otherwise, you can’t connect your devices.

To know whether your devices support Mircast, check their program version.

Here are the devices that have a Miracast feature:

  • Android devices: Android 4.2 or later.
  • Windows devices: Windows 8.1 or later.

How to check the program version on Android/Windows

On Android devices:

  1. Go to settings.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
  3. Click “About Phone.”
  4. Then, look for the “Android Version” section.

On Windows devices:

  1. Go to settings.
  2. Select “System.”
  3. Scroll down until you reach the bottom page.
  4. Click “About.”
  5. Find the “Windows specifications” section.
  6. Then, check the information under “Edition.”

#2: By using ScreenBeam Mini2

Do this if: Your phone supports Miracast, but your TV doesn’t.

ScreenBeam Mini2is a casting device that uses Miracast technology.

As mentioned, both your devices should support Miracast to enable the Miracast feature.

But with this device…

You can easily connect a Miracast-enabled phone to a non-Miracast-enabled TV.

Which is great, especially if you want to connect to a non-smart TV…

Since non-smart or older TVs don’t support Miracast connection.

Note: Depending on your devices, the steps to set up and use ScreenBeam Mini2 vary.

But here’s a general way to do it:

Step 1: Plug the ScreenBeam Mini2 device into a power source and your TV’s HDMI port.

Step 2: Change the TV’s input to “HDMI.”

After this, the ScreenBeam’s “Ready to connect” page will display on the TV screen.

Step 3: Enable the “screen mirroring” feature on your phone.

You can easily do it by scrolling from the top of the screen. And tapping the “screen mirroring” button.

Step 4: Select your TV from the options.

Then just wait for your devices to connect.

#3: By enabling Samsung DeX

Do this if: You’re using a Samsung smartphone with a Samsung DeX feature and a TV that supports Miracast.

Samsung DeX is a casting feature that’s available to many Samsung devices. Including smartphones and tablets.

Note: The most notable feature of Samsung DeX is that it can turn your phone’s screen to “desktop mode.”

Before, this feature required a wired connection using a DeX cable to connect devices.

But thanks to Samsung developers…

You can now pair your Samsung phone to your TV wirelessly using the DeX technology.

All you have to do is to enable the following:

  • Miracast setting on your TV.
  • Samsung DeX setting on your Samsung phone.

Here’s a more comprehensive guide on using Samsung DeX:

Step 1: Enable the Miracast function on your TV.

Step 2: Choose the type of device you want to connect to. In this case, a “phone.”

Step 3: Enable “Samsung DeX” on your Samsung smartphone.

Scroll from the top of the screen. Then, look for and tap “DeX.”

Step 4: Select your smart TV from the device list.

You should see the Samsung DeX logo on your TV screen right after this. This indicates that your devices are now connected.

#4: By enabling Peer-to-Peer AirPlay

Do this if: You use Apple smart devices.

If Samsung smartphones have Samsung DeX, iPhone devices have AirPlay.

Note: AirPlay can be used on non-Apple devices. But you can only use it without internet between Apple products.

Peer-to-peer AirPlayis a casting feature that uses no internet. And it’s exclusively for Apple devices.

So, suppose you have an iPhone 12 Pro and an Apple TV 4K device. This type of connection is best for you.

However, your devices should meet the following requirements for the connection to work:

  • Apple TV HD tvOS 9.0 or later.
  • Apple TV 4K tvOS 11.0 or later.
  • iPhone that was manufactured in 2012 or later.

Follow these steps to set up Peer-to-Peer AirPlay:

Step 1: Disconnect your iPhone and Apple TV from the WiFi.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone to the Apple TV via Bluetooth.

Step 3: Enable AirPlay on your iPhone.

Step 4: Select your Apple TV from the list.

Suppose you can’t find your Apple TV device from the list. Restart either of your devices.

#5: By using an MHL-to-HDMI adapter

Do this if: You use a smartphone that supports an MHL connection.

MHL connection is a protocol that allows users to cast their smartphones to HD TVs.

Unlike the above options, MHL requires a wired connection. You’d need an MHL-to-HDMI adapter to connect your phone to your TV.

The good thing is it’s available to many popular smartphones brands such as:

  • LG.
  • Sony.
  • Sharp.
  • Fujitsu.
  • Alcatel.
  • Huawei.
  • Samsung.

Note: Your phone should have an “HDMI Out” port for it to work.

So, make sure to check the compatibility of your device first.

To do that, either check your product manual. Or search your phone model online for leads.

Here’s a quick guide on how to connect your phone to a TV via an MHL connection:

Step 1: Plug the USB cable of the adapter into your phone charging port.

Step 2: Plug the HDMI cable of the adapter into your TV’s HDMI port.

Step 3: Plug the USB cable of the adapter into a power source.

Step 4: Change the TV’s input to “HDMI.”

Step 5: Wait a few seconds for your phone screen to cast on your TV.

#6: By using a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter

Do this if: You have an iPhone device.

If you use an iPhone, you can also connect your devices using an HDMI cable.

But since iPhones don’t have USB ports, you’ll have to use a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter instead.

Note: You’d also need a separate USB cable and HDMI cable to complete the setup.

It works the same with way #5. Except that this time, you’re using a cable adapter that’s compatible with your iPhone’s port.

Here’s how to connect your devices using a Lightning-to-HDMI cable:

Step 1: Plug the Lightning cable of the adapter into your iPhone’s charging port.

Step 2: Plug the separate HDMI cable into the adapter and TV’s HDMI ports.

Step 3: Plug the one end of a USB cable into the adapter’s USB port. And into a power source.

Step 4: Adjust your TV’s input setting to “HDMI.”

Step 5: Wait for your phone to cast to your TV screen.

But there’s a trick to using the Chromecast screen mirroring feature without using WiFi.

How?

By creating a network using your smartphones’ hotspots.

What you’d need:

  • Chromecast device that’s plugged into your TV.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Disconnect your devices from the WiFi.

Step 2: Open the hotspot of your first phone.

Step 3: Connect your second phone to your first phone’s hotspot.
