How to change your name on bank account

If the error affects only one or two characters of your first or middle name, please give us a call at 1-888-464-0727 and we may be able to update it over the phone.

What you will need to update your name

Before the information on your bank account can be updated, please be sure that you have updated your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA).

In order to update your name, we will need two things:

  1. A supporting document showing the new name, such as:
    • a current driver's license
    • a marriage certificate or divorce decree
    • a new social security card 
    • or other legal name change document
  2. An IRS W-9 form
    • The IRS requires a hand-written signature (“wet signature”) on an IRS W-9 form for it to be valid
    • Please do not sign the form digitally or using software such as Adobe or DocuSign
    • If the change is for a minor customer, we still need the supporting document (can be birth certificate) and the Guardian needs to sign and date the W-9

How to submit your name change request

There are a few ways to submit your request:

  • You can submit your request in person at a Capital One branch. Use our Branch Locator to find a branch near you
  • You can call us at 1-888-464-0727 and request that we email you a secure link that will allow you to upload the documents directly to us
  • You can fax the documents to us at 1-888-464-3220 ATTN: Capital One 
  • Or you can mail them to Capital One, PO Box 98707, Las Vegas, NV 89193

Once the documents are received, we will update your account as soon as possible; please allow us up to 10 business days to process your request. 

Ordering a new debit card after your name has been updated/changed

Once your updated name is reflected on your account(s), you can order a new debit card by taking the following steps:

Sign in online at capitalone.com or on the Capital One mobile app (text "MOBILE" to 80101 for a link to download)


Select the spending account for your debit card:


On the web: Choose “account services and settings.” Under “manage debit card,” choose “replace damaged card” and follow the steps

On the app: Select "view all" from the "I want to..." menu. Scroll down to "replace damaged card" and follow the steps

To report a name change, please visit your local TD Canada Trust branch and provide name change documentation (e.g., Marriage certificate, license, solemnization document, certificate of name change, etc.).

If you are looking to change your Account Names (i.e. "Home Expenses" instead of Every Day Chequing Account) follow these steps to rename your accounts:

The documents we’ll accept are:

  • Marriage certificate – UK or foreign (as long as it can be translated)
  • Decree absolute (divorce)
  • Civil partnership registration
  • Deed poll – these don’t need to to be witnessed by a solicitor but they must be signed by the person named on the deed, and that signature independently witnessed 
  • Statutory declaration – with the signature of the named person, witnessed by a solicitor or magistrate
  • Driving licence
  • Passport

If you have the following products, you’ll have to use the contact details shown here to make any changes.

  • Barclaycard – you can change your details online or call 0800 151 0900 (Monday to Friday from 7am to 8pm, and Saturday from 9am to 5pm)
  • Mortgage – call 0800 022 4022 (Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm, and Saturday from 9am to 1pm)
  • Currency account – call 0345 975 7575 (Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm). If you are a Barclays Wealth or Private Banking customer with us, please speak to your banker or servicing team directly
  • Investments – more information can be found on our investments pages
  • Home insurance – Depending on who the policy is with:
    Aviva home insurance – policy codes starting MPH, call 0800 051 3533. Policy codes starting MHO/BHI/BCI/WCI, call 0800 015 0246 (Monday to Friday 8am to 10pm, Saturday 8am to 6pm, Sunday and bank holidays 10am to 4pm)
  • Life insurance – Depending on who your policy is with, you’ll need to call Aviva on 0800 046 6171 (Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday 8am to 6pm, Sunday and bank holidays 10am to 4pm), or Legal & General on 03700 104 080 (Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm)
  • Travel insurance – If you have single, annual or multi-trip travel insurance with us, please call Cigna on 0330 102 6417 (Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm). This is only for standalone travel policies. If your cover is through your current account Travel Pack, then changing your address for your account will also make this change
  • Payment protection insurance or Barclays income insurance – call Monument Insurance DAC on 0800 056 1414 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm)

Can I update my bank account name online?

You can send your bank account name change application online as well as by visiting your bank branch.

How long does it take to change your name on your bank account?

After verifying and acknowledging your application, the bank will begin the process of changing your name in its system. The bank will notify you via SMS or email when this process is complete. . It will take no more than 4-5 working days.

How do I change my name on the bank app?

Step 1: Write an Application for Change of Name.
Your Existing Name with the bank and New Name..
Your Bank Account Number and CIN/ CIF Number (printed on your passbook/ account statement).
Proper Reason for changing your name..
Your Address, Registered Mobile Number and Registered Email Id..
