Cider Vinegar vs. White Vinegar Cider vinegar and white vinegar are different in many ways. Both are useful in cooking and for home remedies, and personal uses, and are used across the world for various purposes. While they were not created for multi-purpose use, they are increasingly used in different ways across the world. Vinegars are created from the fermentation process which will yield acetic acids that vary depending on the item that is fermented. Cider vinegar and white vinegar are commonly used for cooking and for their personal and household benefits. The word ‘vinegar’ is French derived which means ‘sour wine,’ and sour vinegars truly are. The process of fermentation can take years for just a small amount of vinegar. This is another reason why some consider it as wine because it must age to perfection. Some vinegars further the process of fermentation through adding certain types of acid to the mixture like tartaric acid and citric acid. Cider vinegar is actually made from apple cider and is used in the United States for the many benefits it has for people. Cider vinegar is not typically ingested. It is extremely acidic and can burn the throat. There are those who believe that it serves other purposes like helping to lose weight or curing acne. These claims have not been scientifically proven, though. Cider vinegar is golden brown in color like apple cider, and it is important to be kept in an air-tight container if you are going to reuse it. This cider is created from fresh fruit that has been fermented and oxidized. After that it is cider vinegar. During the fermentation process, a thick skin is created above the vinegar which is called ‘the mother of vinegar.’ This thick, bacterial skin is considered useful to some people. So cider vinegar can be found with or without this thick skin in certain parts of the world. White vinegar, most commonly found in the United Kingdom, is made from the oxidization process completed with grain alcohol. While it is not exclusively used in the U.K., it can
be found in other foods such as salad dressings and marinade mixes. The British have grown fond of using white vinegar for cooking and using it as a form of seasoning similar to how salt is used. Outside of the kitchen, white vinegar can be used to serve various household purposes for those who do not wish to use harsh chemicals to clean with. This form of vinegar is commonly used to polish

Left for several weeks to a few months, microorganisms turn it to cider (with alcohol), then vinegar. You can also start with apple cider or unpasteurized apple juice. Since apple cider naturally turns to vinegar when left to ferment, it’s basically just that: fermented apple cider. The alcohol is turned into acetic acid bacteria (acetobacter species). It can take weeks to months to develop depending on the environment, sugar levels and other factors. This vinegar develops a brown color with a fruity flavor.
