Video Review & InstallationSo if you own a '14 to '18, 5.3 liter powered Silverado and you're looking for a nice stealthy black open element intake that's on the more affordable end by the way and you want some nice performance gains, you should be checking out K&N's Blackhawk Cold Air Intake. Yes, this is a pretty affordable open element design, however, you will still get some pretty good horsepower and torque gains out of this. We actually just ran our truck on the Dyno bone stock and it made 281 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque.We then went ahead and threw on the Blackhawk intake with a basic tune to take advantage of the bigger element and our truck made 291 horsepower and 323 pound-feet of torque. It's pretty nice, those are 10 horsepower gains and 18 pound-feet of torque gains with very consistent curve gains. Now the curve gains are really nice because that's actually what you're gonna be feeling when you're driving around on the city streets. And like I said, this is on the more affordable end of open element designs, however, it's still coming from one of the best names in the industry and that's K&N. They've been around longer than I've been alive so it's safe to say, if you want quality, you should be checking out K&N. Now if you like the way that sounds, you'll like the way the Blackhawk looks and I certainly do, I'm a fan of that blacked-out, murdered-out look. You should stick around. I'm actually gonna show you the install step-by-step. Now, this shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to an hour in the driveway with basic hand tools.There's no actual modification required on the truck itself, so I'm gonna go ahead and give this an easy one out of three wrenches on my patented difficulty meter. So without further ado, let's go ahead and get started. To install your new intake, you will need the following tools: a 1/4-inch drive ratchet, a short extension, an 8-millimeter deep socket, a 10-millimeter deep socket, a T15 Torx bit, and a 4-millimeter Allen key. Optional but helpful tools include an impact wrench.So first things first, we have to remove our factory air intake. Now, to do that, you're gonna start with removing the factory tube itself. We're also gonna disconnect our MAF sensor and to pull the tube out of the vehicle, you're gonna need an 8-millimeter socket and an extension. All right, with our factory air tube loosened, all we have to do now is disconnect both breather hoses on either side before we can pull it from the vehicle. You've got one breather hose over here on the resonator and then on the same location on the opposite side. Well they're just quick disconnect fittings so you just gotta squeeze them with your fingers to loosen them.All right, with your factory intake tube removed, you have to remove your factory air box with the MAF sensor in it as well. This is not actually bolted down, it's just held in with a couple rubber grommets, so just use a little bit of hand pressure and pull it out of the engine bay. So as you can see, the new Blackhawk intake really does a great job of cleaning up the engine bay and that's thanks to ditching this large and ugly factory air box, in favor of this nice high-flow filter with this open element design and heat shield. Now before we install the new Blackhawk intake, we have to do a little bit of work on the table here. First things first, we're gonna swap out our MAF sensor and to do that, you're gonna need a T15 Torx bit because of these self-tapping screws here.All right, now that your original MAF sensor is installed in your new intake tube, it's time to finish setting up the tube. To do that, you're going to grab two of the plastic barbs in the kit and these are gonna be for those new crankcase ventilation hoses on either side. All right, your intake tube is set up and ready to go. The last step on the table here is installing the weather stripping on the heat shield. It's gonna make sure you have a nice tight seal, make sure none of that hot engine bay air gets into your filter which could kill performance.All right, now that our factory air box is removed, we gotta pull the mounting tray itself. That's gonna make room for our new heat shield. To do that, you're gonna need a 10-millimeter deep socket and it's helpful to have an extension as well. All right, now that our heat shield's all set up, it's time to install it. We're gonna put this in the spot where we originally removed that mounting plate for the factory air box. Now this installs with those three original bolts we pulled out, one on the back here and two in the front here. So you're gonna need a 10-millimeter socket for these.All right, now that our heat shield is all set up, it's time for us to install our air filter. To do that, you're gonna grab the largest clamp in the kit and slide it over the rubber end of the filter itself, then you're gonna take the plastic adapter for the intake tube and slide it inside this rubber coupler. You're gonna tighten down this clamp using an 8-millimeter deep socket. All right, then once you have all that tightened down, you're gonna throw this inside the heat shield itself and you see these two little threaded holes on either side, you're gonna take these two bolts provided in the kit and you're gonna tighten those down. That's gonna secure your new air filter to your heat shield so that we can install our intake tube.All right, now that our air filter is in place we're gonna install the rubber couplers on the air filter and the throttle body. We're gonna tighten those down with the two provided clamps in the kit. Again, these are 8-millimeter heads. Once we do so, we can install our intake tube. All right, with the rubber couplers in place on the air filter and the throttle body, we're gonna go ahead and install our intake tube. For that, you're gonna grab the last of the two clamps, again, 8-millimeter nuts on the ends of those to tighten those down. All right, now that our intake is installed, we're gonna install our crankcase ventilation hoses, one on either side of the valve covers. Once we do that, we're gonna plug in our MAF sensor. So as you can see, the Blackhawk intake does install quite easily and you are still getting some pretty good performance gains as you saw from our Dyno runs earlier. And on that note, that actually wraps up my review and install of K&N's Blackhawk Cold Air Intake, fitting your '14 to '18, 5.3 liter powered Silverado.
