Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, reckoned Italo Calvino; but the best have pretty decent architecture, a buzzing food scene and smart places to stay too. For our most recent annual Reader's Choice Awards 2022 survey, with results announced in October 2022, the desire of discerning travellers to explore bucket list destinations off-limits for sometime was evident. Singapore is booming once again, India is open for business having felt the full brunt of a global pandemic, and Japan is ready to share its cultural wonders once again.

These are the best cities in the world, according to the 2022 Readers' Choice Awards. The scores below are percentages representing overall average levels of satisfaction.

  10. Mumbai, India. Score 88.27

  Having emerged from the devastating pandemic, Mumbai is open for business once again, with travellers planning trips in their swathes. Sunset appreciation at the Gateway of India, strolls along Marine Drive and explorations of ancient temples that surround the city await the adventurous, while shopping opportunities are plentiful with a new generation of female entrepreneurs leading the way. Mingle in Soho House or indulge in one of the region’s leading spas – there’s so much to explore.

  9. Cape Town, South Africa. Score 88.27

  On pristine beaches, penguins waddle about their business while leaping dolphins frame spectacular sunsets – and thrill-seekers head out on boats to come face-to-face with fearsome sharks. Away from the ocean, guests check into world-renowned hotels such as The Silo, the recognisable property where rooms feature contemporary African art and 360-degree views of the city. Table Mountain views are enjoyed over supper, especially during trips to Delaire Graff Estate for wine-swirling and impeccable tasting menus.

  8. Québec City, Canada. Score 88.29

  The only fortified city north of Mexico, Québec City is a city break alternative to the more finance-focused and modern metropolises of Canada, helped by a diminutive population (well under one million) and a charm arguably unique in the country. Amble through the streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, one of Canada’s most-photographed landmarks, is a historic hotel dating back to 1893. Even if a stay in one of its lavish rooms is out of the question, secure a coveted spot at 1608 Bar for an evening.

  7. Mérida, Mexico. Score 88.30

  The vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán is one of two Mexican cities to make the best cities in the world list in 2022. Mayan roots meet colonial heritage here. Beachfront retreats and boutique gems litter the coast, while some combine city exploration with stays a short drive from the city along the peninsula, such as Chablé Yucatán.

  6. Tokyo, Japan. Score 88.32

  Often viewed as the gate to the rest of Japan’s wonders, the bustling metropolis of Tokyo (population 13.96 million at the last count) has a lot to offer as a destination in itself. That Tokyo hotels have been joined by smart chains speaks volumes, with 2021’s Tokyo Edition Toranomon and the upcoming Bulgari Tokyo attracting increased interest. Japan was closed to visitors for almost two years due to the pandemic, but recent figures show the country as a whole is having no issues pulling in the international crowds once again.

  5. San Sebastián, Spain. Score 89.15

  If there’s one thing that’s helped bolster San Sebastián’s popularity in recent years, it’s food. While the beauty of the city has been acknowledged for years, this Spanish city-break favourite has welcomed exciting restaurants and hotels in more recent years. Michelin-starred options include Akelaŕe, a three-star restaurant offering spectacular views and playful takes on contemporary dishes, while pintxos bars such as Ganbara and Antonio Bar are must-visits on any gluttonous group escape.

  Long a favourite of gap-year backpackers due to its bustling markets and transport options to remote destinations in Thailand and across Southeast Asia, Bangkok now has more to offer than ever. Enter The Standard Bangkok, one of the region’s hottest openings changing the stuffy stereotype of marble-pillared five-stars in the capital.
