Used street legal golf carts for sale near me

As you may have guessed, golf carts can range greatly in pricing. I’ll explain all of the differences below.

Introduction

Golf carts today are used for way more than just golfing. People use them for a variety of reasons such as:

  • Riding around the neighborhood
  • Driving downtown
  • Yard work
  • Campgrounds
  • Warehouses
  • Beach communities
  • And much more!

No matter what you plan on using your golf cart for, there is definitely one available to suit your needs.

To sum it up quickly, golf carts range anywhere from a few thousand dollars all the way to $20+ thousand. Some of the factors that determine the price of the golf cart are, the condition, age, where you buy it from, the warranty you get, and what accessories it comes with.

For anyone looking to get a standard 4 seater electric golf cart you can expect to pay somewhere around $5,000 to $10,000 depending on your needs.

If you are looking to get a standard 6 seater electric golf cart you can expect to pay somewhere around $8,000 to $15,000 depending on your needs.

Or if you are in need of a street legal golf cart you can expect to pay around $8,000 to $14,000.

To start off we’ll go over the prices of New Vs Used golf carts.

New Golf Carts

There are many advantages to buying a new golf cart.

  • You’re the first owner so you never have to worry about what’s wrong with it.

  • You’re buying it from a dealership so you have a place to go back to if it ever has an issue.

  • Typically new carts come with great warranties from the manufacturer.

  • And they also typically have finance promotions from the manufacturer.

On the other hand they are more expensive than the used golf carts you may look at.

Depending on the brand and what kind of golf cart it is, new golf carts typically range from $9000 to $18,000.

If you’re looking for a 4 seater you can usually expect to spend between $9000 to $14,000.

If you’re looking for a 6 seater you can usually expect to spend $14,000+.

E-Z-GO, Club Car, or Yamaha will be the most expensive brands but the most well known and trusted golf carts on the market. If you’ve driven a golf cart in the past it most likely was one of these.

Newer brands of golf carts such as Evolution, Icon, or Advanced EV will be considerably less than one of the more well known brands. But that doesn't mean that they are a bad choice.

We will go in more detail on this later.

Used Golf Carts

When it comes to used golf cart prices are going to vary greatly. That’s because some used carts have been completely rebuilt with new parts. Others may be 10 years old and never used almost the entire time.

For a used golf cart in good running condition you can usually expect to spend between $4500 to $13,000.

4 seater used golf carts usually range from $4500 to $9000

6 seater golf carts are much harder to come by but with enough looking they can be found. They will typically range from $8000 to $13,000 and up.

If you are thinking about purchasing a used golf cart from a dealer you can expect to pay more than something you may find on craigslist or facebook marketplace.

With a dealer you’ll usually get a golf cart in better condition, that comes with a warranty, and you have the option to finance it.

The important things to check when looking at a used cart is the condition of the cart, the age of the cart, how old the batteries are, and how well has the golf cart been serviced. And make sure to always take used golf carts for a test drive to make sure they function properly.

While it may be more money up front to purchase from a dealer, these carts tend to have less issues in the long run. This is because the cart has already been looked over and had any faulty parts replaced.

Street legal golf carts are becoming more popular every single year.

Before I go over pricing I will explain to you what a street legal golf cart is so you can determine if it’s something that you need.

A street legal golf cart is a golf cart that you register with your local DMV. You will get a license plate and insurance on it just like you would with a car. Yes this means you’ll have to get it inspected yearly and pay registration fees and property tax. But depending on where you will be using your cart this may or may not be required.

Street legal golf carts are more expensive than a regular golf cart because of the added equipment that’s required.

How do you know if you need a street legal golf cart?

An easy way to find out is to call your local golf cart dealership and tell them where you will be using your golf cart. They should be able to let you know if you need it to be street legal or not.

New street legal golf carts will typically range from $10,000 to $16,000.

For used street legal golf carts you can expect to pay anywhere from $8,000 and up.

All street legal golf carts will come with a title just like a car. Make sure if buying one used the owner does have the title in hand.

Do Lifted Golf Carts Cost More?

Lifted golf carts do cost more than standard golf carts. If you are interested in buying a lifted golf cart you can expect to pay between $1000 to $2000 more than a non lifted golf cart.

The price will depend on the style of lift kit that you choose and the rim and tire option that you decide to go with.

If you find a golf cart you like that isn’t lifted you can always install a lift kit after the purchase as well.

Do Different Brands of Golf Carts Cost More?

Different brands of golf carts do carry different price tags.

Any of the 3 major brands which are E-Z-GO, Club Car, and Yamaha will be more expensive than some of the newer brands that are out now.

E-Z-GO, Club Car, and Yamaha have been around for over 40 years now. With a reputable name, great quality carts, and a big company backing their products they do cost more.

There are dozens of new golf cart companies that have made a name for themselves in the last decade. These carts are less expensive but some are still great quality!

When buying a golf cart with a less known name be sure to ask how long they have been around, if parts are readily available, and get the specifics on the warranty.

Any brands that have been around for at least 10 years are usually stable companies to buy from. Anything less than that and you could have issues with getting parts or service in the future.

Gas vs Electric Golf Cart Prices.

On average gas golf carts tend to cost less than electric golf carts. The difference will usually be between $500 to $1000 less. For example an electric E-Z-GO S4 has an MSRP of 10,999. The gas S4 has a MSRP of $11,999.

As far as the cost differences in ownership there is not much difference here either.

With an electric golf cart you will have to change the batteries every 4-6 years.

With a gas golf cart you will not only have to pay for the gas. You will also have to pay for annual maintenance on the motor which can include oil changes, replacing air and fuel filters, and changing out belts.

Overall the cost of ownership equals out to be roughly the same with an electric cart being slightly more expensive.

Private Sellers vs Dealer Pricing

Private sellers will almost always be cheaper to buy a golf cart from vs buying from a dealer.

You can find golf carts from private sellers from $500 to $10,000.

Private sellers don’t usually do as much work to their golf cart to prepare it to sell. And this is one of the biggest differences between the price of a private seller and a dealership.

However if you know what you are looking for you can find great deals from private sellers online!

When buying from a dealer you will usually get a golf cart that is in better condition, with a warranty, financing, and a place to come back to if you ever have a problem.

If that is something that’s worth the extra money is only something you can decide!

Conclusion

Your decision on what type of golf cart will suit your needs best at the best price possible should be fun and easy.

A great golf cart can always be found at a price that suits your needs.

Just remember that age, condition, brand, and where you are purchasing it will make the biggest difference in the price you pay.
