Yes, people in both the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) programs are typically eligible to receive the first and second stimulus check. The IRS has stated that these recipients should automatically qualify to receive the second stimulus check, with very few exceptions.

To receive a stimulus check you must have a Social Security number and you cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. Also, your household income must not be greater than the following thresholds: $75,000 single; $112,500 head of household; or $150,000 married.

In December new stimulus payments in the amount of $600 were signed into law.

In December there was also a lot of talk by congress-people of $2,000 payments. But those are not happening, as of January 1, 2020 – because the last Senate didn’t vote on any bill to replace the $600 stimulus check with a $2,000 payment. A new Senate and House will be sworn in Jan. 3 – so there is still a possibility that a third stimulus check will happen in early 2021.

When will I get in my second stimulus check?

Just a few days after the new stimulus checks were signed into law, the IRS and US Treasury Department began making payments through direct deposit, paper check and EIP card. Some people have already received theirs, while many have not. These payments will continue through Jan. 15, 2020.

The IRS website states that SSI and SSDI recipients should expect to get their stimulus check money the same way they receive their first stimulus checks, but faster, since the payment system is already in place.

Do I have to do anything to get my new stimulus payment?

According to the IRS, individuals who receive Social Security Disability, Social Security Retirement, and Supplemental Security Income should automatically receive stimulus payments.

If you receive SSI or SSDI benefits as your only form of income, you are not required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019 to receive a stimulus check.

If you receive SSDI but didn’t get the first check, the reason you didn’t receive your stimulus payment may be that the IRS may still need more information about your eligibility. While the official deadline to file a claim for the first stimulus check has passed, it’s not too late to receive your payment.

To receive your stimulus money from the first round, you will need to claim the additional amount when you file your 2020 federal taxes, using the new “Recovery Rebate Credit”. The IRS is expected to release more details on the specific action to take as it gets closer to the April 15, 2021 tax filing deadline.
